PAT BONNER has called for Ronny Deila to drop Emilio Izaguirre and put his faith in teen star Kieran Tierney.

The 18-year-old has played four games in the green and white first team, most notably making his European debut by starting at left-back against Fenerbahce at the start of the month.

That opportunity was given to him as his Honduran team-mate was serving a ban following his red card against Ajax in the previous Europa League tie.

But after Tierney impressed again after playing 90 minutes in Sunday’s 5-0 win over Dundee United, Bonner is looking for the Isle of Man-born teenager to be a regular fixture in Deila’s starting XI.

“Tierney should be in ahead of Emilio Izaguirre because he’s Scottish and I like to see young lads being given their chance,” he said.

“I was really impressed with young Tierney at the weekend, I thought it was magnificent to watch.

“Another key objective that I feel this club should be built on is getting young guys through the system to become part of the first team. That should have been happening over the last two or three years, even under Neil Lennon.

“I think there should be more evidence of youngsters being given an opportunity in the league so it was lovely to see it in Tierney and I was lifted by how the young lad played.

“He got up and down that line but he also looked as if he could defend a bit too when questions were asked of him. So I was delighted and I’m sure that’s one of the things the fans will be talking about over this week.”

The biggest talking point apart from the result in Molde was the angry reaction of Kris Commons when he was substituted on Thursday night, a response he has since apologised for.

It was a sight Bonner was disappointed to see, but he is glad the matter appears to have been resolved – for his manager’s sake.

Reflecting on the former Scotland forward’s two goals in the thrashing of United, he said: “It was an important result to get back on the winning way and get the Kris Commons thing out of the road, that looked very harmonious with him scoring two goals.

“Personally I didn’t like to see what Commons did. I think those things are best kept in private. There’s always a reaction from a player who is taken off after he scores, but it was the prolonged manner of his actions that I didn’t like.

“But they’ve sorted it out and hopefully it’s put to bed and that’s the end of it. Kris Commons is an important part of the team, he showed on Saturday that he can score goals and I’ve always said he’s better in the team than out.

“Ronny needs him so let’s hope that’s the end.”
