Michael Mols could have signed for Celtic before he went across the city to Ibrox.

The Dutchman was a player that I looked at very closely for Celtic and it was a tie between Mols and Pierre van Hooijdonk in terms of who we were going to sign.

I felt that van Hooijdonk had more goals in him, while Mols was better at leading the line.

It was one of those occasions when all three of us – Tommy, myself and Billy – went to watch them both play before deciding that it was Pierre that we would go for.

To be honest, it was always Tommy who would have had the final say because ultimately it was his responsibility who came into the club.

And that is where I feel that now a similar system could benefit Celtic.

It also means that it is very clear who is signing players and who is responsible for the recruitment at the club.

Whoever gets the Celtic job now will have their hands full as they seek to oversee the club getting back into the environment of the UEFA Champions League. Having someone that you trust, someone you can go to and say ‘I need a forward, I need a left-footed midfielder who can do x, y and z’ it is then down to someone else to do the donkey work in sourcing a player who meets those requirements.

If you trust the judgement of the person in that role then it can be so beneficial to the club.
