Hoops legend Davie Hay has told Leigh Griffiths not to be daft enough to contemplate a trip to Hampden for the William Hill Scottish Cup final.

Griffiths, a well-known Hibs fan, revealed that he planned to seek permission from Celtic to attend the game between Rangers and the Leith team which takes place next month.

But, having already landed himself in a situation that ended with the striker on a final written warning from the club after being caught on camera at singing offensive songs in a pub at Tynecastle following an Edinburgh derby in 2014, Hay believes the onus is on the player to steer away from a potential flashpoint.

“There is no way to be discreet when you are a Celtic player walking up to Hampden when Rangers are playing.” Said Hay. “If it was up to me and I was asked if he could be granted permission to go to the game, my answer would be a resounding no.

“Whatever happens, the best course of action is that he stays in the house and watches the game from the comfort of his own living room.

“That way, whatever happens, whatever his reaction is, however he feels about it, there is no-one with a smart phone recording him. He can do what he likes, but it has to be behind closed doors.

“It is well known that he has been a Hibs fan all his life, but the bottom line is that Celtic pay his wages. He is a Celtic player, full stop. So, it makes sense that he stays well away from Hampden – and keeps his nose clean in the process.”
