NONE of the young fringe players who were given their chance in the Ladbrokes Premiership match against St. Johnstone in Perth on Wednesday night did particularly well.

Scott Allan, Ryan Christie and Saidy Janko all got a chance to show what they are capable of. None of them performed particularly well as the Parkhead club lost 2-1.

But if you have featured as infrequently as they have in the first team, if you have only been playing in development games, there is always an edge missing from your play.

It was correct for Ronny Deila to put them in. The league was won and there was nothing at stake in the game apart from pride.

But it was difficult for Allan, Christie and Janko to impress given how little competitive football they have been involved in during the 2015/16 season.

So it would be wrong to judge these players based purely on their displays against the Saints at McDiarmid Park.

They need to be given extended runs in the team in order to show what they have to contribute.

Because Celtic have so many players in the same position, Allan and Christie haven’t had much game time. Hopefully, they will get more of a chance when the new manager comes in.

I can’t say the same about Efe Ambrose, however. The Nigerian was responsible for two goals being given away against Aberdeen last Sunday and for one goal being lost against St. Johnstone on Wednesday.

I would think the new manager will look at the mistakes Efe has made this season, and there has been a lot of them, and ask him to move on. I think it would be best for the player and best for the club if he did.
