MARK WILSON would watch another new famous face wander into the Celtic dressing room with a reputation, decent CV and a sense of superiority.

The-then right-back always sort of knew what was coming next.

Legends, cough-cough, such as Jiri Jarosik, Thomas Gravesen, Evander Sno, Massamo Donati and Marc Crosas all came and went from Parkhead over the years without really making any sort of impact.

Oh sure, there was the odd goal and moment here and there, but when you look at the clubs they came from, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Feynoord, AC Milan and Barcelona, it was not asking much to ask for a bit more from them.Glasgow Times: Celtic enjoyed a good season but the slate is now wiped clean and it all starts afresh, reckons Mark Wilson

That's the thing about life at Celtic Park. No matter where a player has come from, it is hugely doubtful that they would have experienced anything like life as a footballer in Glasgow.

This is why Wilson, although entertained by it all, has been puzzled by Joey Barton's claims that he will walk Scottish football without a bead of sweat forming on his forehead.

The former Celtic man saw for himself how difficult some find it. Indeed, Rangers back in the day signed a fair few "big names" who produced next to nothing.

Wilson believes that the bold Joey will soon find out what it's all about.

He said: "I’m a wee bit surprised Barton has been so outspoken before he’s played a game, but he’s made a career out of his bad boy image.

"He’ll find it different with the intensity of the Old Firm environment. You could probably get away with it at Manchester City.Glasgow Times: 24/05/16 . MURRAY PARK - GLASGOW . Rangers' newest signing Joey Barton is unveiled to the press at Murray Park.

“He’ll be surprised at just how big Rangers and Celtic are in Scotland but nobody will tame him and it will be great for the media.

"It’s just confidence on his part and that’s what you want to hear as a Rangers fan. You want your marquee signing to be brash.

“The important thing is for him to back it up on the pitch. He’s a quality player and I would say he can back it up but how many guys have we seen come up from England and think they can walk this league?

“But I played with loads at Celtic who thought it would be a walk in the park and they didn’t make an impact and hardly get played.

"Barton is slightly different - I think he’ll back it up. But there’s no chance he’s in a different league from Scott Brown. "

Wilson, now retired, is looking to get into coaching but in the meanwhile will continue as an astute pundit.

He is not alone in looking forward to seeing what Celtic under Brendan Rodgers will look like, and where the rest of the Ladbrokes Premiership stands after what so far has been an interesting summer.Glasgow Times: Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers

Wilson said: "The season looks great. I’m the same as everyone else – I can’t wait for it to start.

"Brendan Rodgers is coming in and they needed a massive appointment. Celtic and they went for their number one candidate and they got him.

"I’m looking forward to seeing how he coaches the team and puts his style onto Celtic.

‘On the other side of the city, you’ve got Barton coming in and coming out with his comments.

But again he’s a quality player and I’m looking forward to seeing how he’ll do. Niko Kranjcar maybe coming in as well ..

"I’m sure Rodgers will add a few. It’s going to be great. We’ve missed it really for four years."

But what about those who have not missed the Old Firm (there is no Old Firm - so some say) over the past four seasons?

Wilson said: "I think all these people who say ‘we don’t miss the Old Firm games’ are talking rubbish. I can’t wait for there being four important games next season.

"We’ve missed the spice and the characters. It’s been a wee bit drab Scottish football for the past few years. You remember the days when you’d Gazza and Paolo di Canio going about up here. It’s been a bit boring.

"So Joey Barton being added to the mix and whoever else Brendan Rodgers or whoever brings in will spice things up.

"It will be great. They are good enough players to back it up on the pitch as well."

Wilson has been doing some coaching for PFA Scotland this week and it is something he would like to get into.

He has a good mind and players do respond to him. You would think there would be something out there for him.

Wilson said: "I’ve not really applied for any jobs as there’s not many going about just now. You just hope that somebody might come along and ask you if you’d be interested in coming in.

"I’d love to be a manager but you’ve got to be realistic. I’d probably be better starting off as a coach and going in somewhere under a manager where I can learn and get a feel of things.

"That would be the ideal situation – to start as a coach and progress to a manager in later years.

"I’m still only 32 so I’ve got loads to learn."

Mark Wilson will be a coach at the PFA Scotland Showcase Exit Trial is this Saturday, June 18, with a 3.30pm kick off at Broadwood

The coaches are all young players who have done their A and B Licences and are looking to get in to coaching. This way it is about members helping members and the PFA are helping their members at both ends of the spectrum.

PFA Scotland said: “We have had fantastic support from Todd Lumsden and his staff at New College Lanarkshire who give us the run of their complex at Broadwood, Alan Macartney TotalTeamWearScotland who gave us the training kit FREE, AG Barr who supplied the water and Breathing Space who supplied water bottles.”
