First off, you have got to take your hats off to Brendan Rodgers as well as Peter Lawwell and Dermot Desmond; this summer was about getting Celtic back into the Champions League and they have succeeded in that.

The club hierarchy did the right thing in pushing out the boat to get Brendan into the club this summer – and now they need to do the same again this week.

There is just under a week left of the transfer window and with the money from this year’s participation in the group stages of the Champions League assured – a sum that will lie somewhere between £20 and £30m – there is every reason to bring in two players that would be able to kick Celtic on to another level now.

Let’s be honest. The tie against Hapoel Be’er Sheva was won at Celtic Park in the first leg. I actually feared – as every other Celtic fan did – when they scored their second on Tuesday night that the whole thing was going to fold.

It didn’t, thankfully, but to me it showed up the same two positions that I feel need to be strengthened; another striker and another midfielder. Leigh Griffiths did not see much of the ball because of the pressure that Celtic were under while I thought Moussa Dembele looked bright when he did come on.

But I still think that another forward is necessary now as the club prepare to get into the group stages of the Champions League.

As for the midfield, I felt that it was a performance from the middle of the park that we saw a couple of times last season – most notably in the last Old Firm game at Hampden.

I felt that Scott Brown, Callum McGregor, Nir Bitton and James Forrest were all relatively anonymous. Against Rangers at Hampden in the Scottish Cup in April, Celtic were outmuscled and outmanoeuvred and I felt that the performance against Hapoel was reminiscent of that.Glasgow Times: James Forrest wants Celtic to be celebrating again tonight

The lad James McCarthy has been linked with a loan move to Celtic and I have to say someone of his quality would definitely be able to come in and make a difference. It is a relatively young team and you have to think that one or two other quality additions can really help them to kick on – and can elevate you to another level again.

Saidy Janko had a poor night too but while I know that some people would like to see another right-back come into the club I think that Mikael Lustig can play there while Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic will be back and able to move inside alongside Kolo Toure.

So I think there is a facility to change things defensively.

But certainly, in the middle of the park it would be nice to see a quality player brought in.

The club went the extra mile to get Brendan to the club this summer because they recognised the need for a manager who could get them into the Champions League.

They have been rewarded already for that, but now they need to match that ambition in these final days of the transfer window.Glasgow Times: Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has taken Celtic into the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. The club will find out their fate when the draw is made on Thursday.

The income that is guaranteed from the group stages can make a massive difference to what Celtic can do. It will help them really kick on now domestically but bringing in a couple of really quality additions can also give them a leg-up in Europe too.

It wasn’t pretty the other night and I will say this – Brendan Rodgers will never have had a night like that in his career before. That feeling, of looking at the clock from the 48th minute and willing it to run down, was hellish.

Toure, Scott Sinclair and Kieran Tierney did not too badly but the remaining 60-70 per cent of the team were exceptionally poor. Sviatchenko made a difference when he came on and the shape of the team was changed a bit but there was no getting away from the fear that it was going to get away from them.

All that matters now is that they hung on to get there. It wasn’t pretty but they have achieved what they set out to and the feelgood factor around the manager continues.

There is also a question now of momentum and I fully expect that they will kick on and go from strength to strength now.

But the signs are still there that the manager needs at least one or two reinforcements over the next few days in order that Celtic can elevate themselves that little bit higher.
