Before the Barcelona game there was the derby game against Rangers to focus on.

It meant that much of the focus in the build-up to the trip to the Nou Camp was overshadowed by domestic matters given the hype in the build-up to the game against rangers.

Ironically, by contrast, Barcelona looked as though they focused on their Champions League campaign and lost their domestic game before giving Celtic a hammering.

I still think that there will be many of the players in the Celtic dressing room who are still sore about that result. No-one likes being on the end of a scoreline like that and it will take a while to come to terms with it.

But Wednesday night’s game against Manchester City gives them an opportunity to go out and prove that they deserve to be in this company.

It will not be an easy task by any stretch of the imagination – City’s three-pronged forward line of Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguerro and Raheem Sterling – are players who could grace the Barcelona team so the magnitude of the task is not significantly diminished.

However, I do think that playing on home soil is an entirely different proposition to playing away from home. The crowd can respond and get behind them and I do think that there will be a few players with a point to prove against the Premiership side.

I also think that being at Celtic Park affords you the chance to go and be a little bit more positive and see if you can take anything from the game.

And, not to take anything at all away from Kilmarnock, it has been the kind of week that hasn’t been quite so engulfed in domestic matters which will have allowed some preparation for City. I am not saying that there will be a lack of focus on tomorrow’s visit from Killie but that there hasn’t been quite the same circus as there was in the build-up to the Barca tie.

It will be interesting to see what part Leigh Griffiths might play against the Ayrshire side this weekend, since that may well be an indication of what part he might have, if any, against City.

Much will depend on his match fitness and where he feels he is but I have to say that I wouldn’t be overly anxious about whether it was Griffiths or Moussa Dembele who started the Champions League game.

I think that Dembele has settled in to the side and he has shown already that he can step up. I know he missed the penalty against Barcelona but overall his performances in the big games have been decent.
