Leigh Griffiths has backed Kolo Toure and Celtic to dust themselves down as the Hoops look towards Sunday’s Betfred League Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden.

Toure held his hand up to accepted liability at both goals as Celtic’s chances of securing European football beyond Christmas were rendered highly improbable, but Griffiths believes the veteran defender will get over the uncharacteristic errors.

“The big man was disappointed,” said the striker. “He knows himself that it was individual mistakes but he has been great since he came here so I don’t think we can be too hard on him.

“He knows himself that he has let himself down and the team down but he has saved us time and time again since he has been in and it is just one of these things.

“It is gone now.”

And Griffiths is confident that there is no better way for Celtic to have to lift themselves than the prospect of a game against Rangers at Hampden.

The clubs meet on Sunday and the 25-year-old has insisted that Brendan Rodgers will look to use the Ibrox side to get Wednesday night’s disappointment out of their system.

“It is out of the window now, we have a chance to get to a national cup final at the expense of our greatest rivals,” he said. “Hopefully we can go to Hampden and put on a performance for our fans and try and give them something to forget about the result against Borussia Monchengladbach.

“There were a couple of individual mistakes that cost us goals but we have a massive game to look forward to on Sunday now. We will regroup and we will recover and be ready to go on Sunday.

“We will see what happens on Sunday but I will be chomping at the bit to start the game. It is a derby. I want to be involved but if not I will be on the bench and ready to come on of he needs me.”

Meanwhile, Griffiths has also praised the contribution of Craig Gordon who has come back into the Celtic team after losing his place earlier in the season to Dorus De Vries.

Griffiths described one of Gordon’s saves against Borussia as “world-class” and offered the opinion that the stopper should be a first pick for both club and country.

“I have said it before but since Craig walked in the door here he has been phenomenal,” said Griffiths. “In my opinion he should be Scotland’s number one, although again that is not my decision.

“He keeps proving himself time and time again at Celtic. His save in the first half with the boy’s [Ibrahima Traore] snapshot was world-class.

“Going on the performance against Borussia, he shouldn’t be too hard on himself.

“We have a massive game now on Sunday and hopefully he keeps a clean sheet and we get to the final.”
