MOUSSA Dembele insisted after firing Celtic into the Betfred Cup final that it was still too early to talk about the Hoops claiming the Treble.

The Frenchman shot down Rangers with his fourth goal in just two outings against the Ibrox side to book Brendan Rodgers’ side a place in next month’s final.

Celtic will take on Aberdeen for the first trophy of the season and already appear to be on a relentless march towards a clean sweep.

No Scottish side have so much as laid a glove on the undefeated Parkhead men in domestic competition this term – with Richie Foran’s Inverness the only side to take points from the champions – and it will take an almighty turnaround in fortunes to deny Celtic their first treble since 2001.

But their Hampden match-winner was refusing to contemplate a trophy hat-trick so early in the campaign.

Dembele said: “This team is capable of a lot of things. When we are out there together we give 100 per cent.

“But I won’t say we are capable of doing the treble. We just need to see how our games are going. If we keep winning games we’ll see what happens.

“When we are at 100 per cent it is hard for teams to beat us and that is the reality of the game.

“Days like today are part of the reason why I came here. Celtic is a team who want trophies and I came here to be successful. Hopefully we can make a start on that in the final.”

Celtic dished out a 5-1 pasting in the first Old Firm clash of the campaign last month but Gers were more resolute this time.

However, a Jason Holt chance midway through the second half apart, it was virtually one-way traffic as Celtic dominated.

They had to wait until two minutes from time to grab the clincher as Dembele flicked home in style after substitute strike partner Leigh Griffiths finally found a chink in the Rangers rearguard.

“It was one of the most important goals I’ve ever scored,” the 20-year-old said. “We won the game and that is the most important thing.

“We’re through to the final and now we need to make sure we win the trophy. I wasn’t worried about extra time. I was still confident I would have at least one chance before the end of the game.

“When it came, I took it well so I’m happy.

“Was it as dominant as the last game? I don’t know, I’d just say we had a lot of chances but couldn’t score earlier. Rangers played some good stuff and all credit to them. But we were the best team and deserved to win.”

Gers goalkeeper Matt Gilks believes Rangers showed they were closing the gap on the Hoops, though.

The former Scotland stopper – given the nod ahead of regular number one Wes Foderingham after boss Mark Warburton promised him he would start the Light Blues cup matches this term – said: “After the first game and the result we had a lot of people started talking about a gulf but I think it was just a one-off.

“As you can see today we have actually outplayed them at times and were very unfortunate to concede late on. The gulf is definitely not as big as
everyone thinks.”
