BRENDAN RODGERS has tipped Stuart Armstrong for a Scotland call if he continues his glowing Celtic form.

The former Dundee United midfielder was given the nod to start in the 4-0 win at Ross County on Wednesday and did not disappoint in a commanding performance topped off with a fine goal seven minutes from time.

Finding game time, and in particular 90 minutes, is something the 24-year-old has struggled with this campaign after appearing seven times in 14 appearances from the bench.

But in recent weeks he has really impressed after taking on board advice from his manager, and Rodgers has high hopes for the Highlander to continue in an upward trajectory for club and, hopefully, country.

“There’s no doubt he’s got the physical qualities for that,” said Rodgers, “but at that level it’s about understanding the game tactically.

“He’s a bright boy who takes on information well, and if he keeps going and improving there’s absolutely no question he’s a player that can feature for his national team.”

The Celtic boss also told the Celtic website: “It’s never easy. He’s come into one of the biggest clubs in the world and it sometimes takes that little bit of time to adapt and find your feet.

“He’s definitely done that and he’s a player I enjoy working with.

“He’s super bright, a very clever boy. He thinks about the game, his role in the team and he’s starting to flourish now and that’s all down to him. We just gave him the confidence to play the role, understand his job and he can go out and flourish.”

Armstrong seized the opportunity given to him at the Global Energy Stadium.

Working in tandem with Callum McGregor, his presence was a key one both in and out of possession on a testing night for the defending Premiership champions.

It’s an environment and an experience the man himself is hoping to build on.

"It's important for me when I get the chance to impress that I help the team in any way I can,” said Armstrong.

"I am enjoying it. I had a good chat with the manager at the start of the season and he told me what he expected.

"I've been training hard to do that, keep my energy up and make sure I am ready when he needs me.

"He wants to play the high press, he wants a lot of energy and I'm trying to do that.

"I want to be part of the pressing team and take my opportunity when I get it.

"I wanted to play well against County and influence the game in an attacking and defensive sense.

"Hopefully I did that and can play my part against Aberdeen at the weekend.”
