We have all been a wee bit caught up in talk of the Treble this season but I would have to sound a warning bell before Celtic head to Hampden on Sunday afternoon.

If Brendan Rodgers wins his first piece of silverware as Celtic manager then talk about a clean sweep will intensify, but I was part of the Hoops team who lost 4-1 to Partick Thistle in the League Cup final in 1971.

We got into the dressing room at half-time and we were 4-0 down and to be honest I think we were just shell-shocked. We went and hammered them in the league a couple of weeks later but the point is that it didn’t matter; it couldn’t atone for that defeat at Hampden.

You might get the chance to make up ground lost in a League but never in a Cup final. So however you think that it will be straightforward for Celtic, I would urge just a little bit of caution – as well as some respect to Aberdeen.

That last game at Pittodrie was particularly close. Tom Rogic scored a wonderful goal to separate the side but I actually felt that Aberdeen started the game strongly – and could have nicked a point at the end too.

Derek McInnes’ side will feel that they have nothing to lose on Sunday. They will go into the game under no real pressure because everyone expects Celtic to win. They will carry a decent sized support and in a one-off game we all know that anything can happen.

Scott Sinclair’s absence is disappointing for both the club and the player because he has made a vital contribution this season, with his pace a real asset to Celtic.

If Rodgers’ side play to their strengths and perform as a team then you would expect them to win the game, but my own personal experience would counsel against expecting to turn up in any cup final and look to be handed the trophy.

Winning the first Cup on offer would be a fitting return for the manner in which Celtic have started the season domestically and it is all about going into the game with the right attitude and approach.
