JAMES FORREST believes this could be the best season he has ever had in a Celtic shirt.

The Scotland intenationalist netted the second goal during the weekend win over Motherwell - Celtic's 20th consecutive league win - to take his tally to seven for this season.

Forrest's best return for a season was nine, giving him every chance of eclipsing his own best. The 25-year-old won the Young Player of the Year award four years ago but believes his form is on course to be better than that.

"I think I am on course for double figures, which would be the first for me since I have been in the senior team," said the winger.

"It is good in lots of ways. Obviously for me it is good because it was something that I had wanted to improve on and was one of my targets for this season, but it is also good for the team because we are sharing the goals out.

“There are a few of us in similar positions where we are looking 10 or more for the season, and that is taking out the goals coming from Moussa [Dembele] and Leigh [Griffiths].

“I do think this could be the best season I have had. It is shaping up to be a good season for us as a team which is always what is going to be the most important thing but I do think that I have played some of the most consistent football of my career this season and that has been really satisfying.”

While the goals will always be welcomed, Forrest believes finding the back of the net with some frequency is a by-product of a better all round game.

This time last year Forrest looked to be on his way out of Celtic after a stalemate over his contract. That was resolved upon the arrival of Brendan Rodgers and it is the stability as well as the drive of the Celtic manager that Forrest believes has brought about his resurgence this term.

“I always knew that I wanted to stay here but it was a bit of a relief when it was all sorted,” he said.

“I think as well that the manager was true to his word. He said away at the start that everyone would get their chance and I just wanted to give myself the best chance I possibly could.

“Being settled and knowing you just have to concentrate on playing football does help.

“The gaffer has been brilliant in training and he makes sure that we are playing to our best all the time and I think that has been really important in getting us to where we are just now as a team.

“But, from my own point of view, I felt as though it was a fresh start for me and I knew how badly I wanted to take it.

“Being able just to focus on my game was so important and I think that has shown on the pitch.”
