Brendan Rodgers has insisted that Storm Doris did not wreck havoc with any of Celtic’s preparations for this week’s game against Hamilton Accies as they club had planned their training around it.

Some of the Celtic squad struggled to make it to Lennoxtown yesterday afternoon with a scheduled press briefing cancelled due to the treacherous road conditions around the country.

“We looked at it over the course of the week,” explained Rodgers. “Storm Doris was on its way so our work was built around the early part of the week. Thursday was going to be a down day anyway with the players inside doing some lower intensity stuff like head tennis and a bit of fun.

“We’ll do our tactical bit today [Friday] so the weather hasn’t impacted on our training really.

“My main concern in the morning was players travelling in and their safety.

“But the ones who came in had a little head tennis tournament inside having already done the bulk of their work Monday Tuesday and Wednesday.

“I just didn’t want the others sitting in traffic for hours upon hour just to get here, and then take 12 hours to get home as I’ve heard stories of before.

“I told them to make sure they were safe, in their houses with their families.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers has told Leigh Griffiths that he can be a successful Celtic player for the next eight years – if he knuckles down at the club.

The Celtic manager was public with his criticism of the striker’s lifestyle last month but has maintained that there is no issue between himself and the 26-year-old who netted 40 goals last season.

Griffiths is fit and available this weekend and Rodgers has urged the player to kick on now from here.

“He has had a good few weeks in training now and has looked fit and strong and ready to come back,” said the Celtic manager. “I speak to him every day. It wasn’t something I sprung on him. He knows I have my eye out for him and I want to help him.

“He has had one good season here and my aim here is to make that six or seven or eight seasons and the only way you can do that is by changing a little which can then change a lot in the short, medium and long-term. His response has been brilliant.

“He is a real good kid and he knows that I am looking out for him in every aspect of his life and I just don’t want him to be a player who has one good season and then falls away. I want him to stay at the top of his game and to do that then you need to stay fit and be ready to play as often as you can.”

Eboue Kouassi is also edging closer to first-team action. The 19-year-old who joined the club in the January transfer window is finding his fitness after being struck down with malaria.

The Ivorian has featured in recent weeks for Celtic’s development squad and it is anticipated that he will team up with the senior team imminently.

“He had 90 minutes against Dundee, he had 60 minutes before that and he’ll probably have another 90 minutes,” said Rodgers. “It just takes time to recover from his illness.

“It takes time to recover from that because you are sapped for energy. You need to build up through diet and then training and then you have got to into some sort of match tempo. “
