Celtic defender Mikael Lustig is hoping the Hoops can take their dominant domestic form into the battlegrounds of the European theatre next season and be to the fore in the frontline action.

The Parkhead club will wrap up a sixth consecutive Ladbrokes Premiership title next weekend if they overcome Hearts at Tynecastle.

Lustig has been a key weapon in the armoury this season with Celtic exerting a tyrannical rule over the Scottish scene as they strive for a domestic treble.

Having returned to the group stages of the Champions League this year, Lustig is eager for Celtic to build on the experiences of a fluctuating campaign among Europe’s elite which included a sobering 7-0 thrashing to Barcelona and spirited draws with Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Speaking to the Celtic View, the 30-year-old Swede said: “The main goal will be to feel like we are improving our games in Europe.

“We’d like to be able to go away from home to Germany or Italy and play good football and try to grab more points than we did this year.

“I hope that we can achieve that and become and even better team. It’s going to be hard to replicate what we’ve done domestically this year but obviously we’ll try.

“Not many teams have achieved what we are trying to achieve this season. We’ve won the League Cup already and the League is in the bag and we hope we can get the Scottish Cup. It would be massive for us but first our focus will be on that semi-final.”

Like most players in the Celtic squad, Lustig is revelling in the opportunity to play under Brendan Rodgers’ exciting, expansive regime whether he has been deployed as an attacking full-back or in the centre of defence.

Lustig added: “It’s been great for me. My role has been a little bit different this year. I feel like I have developed as a player and as a person too.

“I’m one of the oldest now and I’ve been in the game for quite a long time now. I’ll always be there to have a chat with the younger players. There are a few of us who have been here a while and we’ll all help where we can.

“It’s great to see so many exciting, young player coming through and I’m really hopeful they can continue with that.”

Back in January, Lustig penned a new deal with Celtic that will keep him in the east end until at least May 2019.

“I’m really pleased to know that I’ll be playing for Celtic for at least two more years and it’s good to get that out of my mind and look forward now,” he noted.

Lusting is approaching 200 appearances for Celtic and is keen to savour more of the highs that he has already enjoyed with the Hoops.

While keen to look forward, Lustig still reflects fondly on the barnstorming night at Parkhead in 2012 when Celtic beat Barcelona 2-1 in the same week as the club celebrated its 125th anniversary.

He said: “There have been plenty of amazing nights here but the win against Barcelona will always be special. Everything was just perfect that night.”
