Jonny Hayes has urged the Hoops support not to compare him to Patrick Roberts.

The Republic of Ireland internationalist was unveiled at Celtic Park yesterday morning after agreeing a £1.3m move for Aberdeen to Celtic. And the 29-year-old is eager to leave his own stamp on the club.

Hayes could be seen as a potential replacement for Roberts, whose future remains unclear after he returned to parent club Manchester City last month after helping Celtic win the Treble.

Talks between Celtic and City reached a stalemate last week and it looks as though Roberts wants to try his chance to impress Pep Guardiola at pre-season training.

Hayes wants to be given time to earn recognition for what he brings to the club.

“I can’t speak highly enough of him but I wouldn’t say I’m his replacement,” said the Irishman. “I wouldn’t want to build myself up like that but I’m sure the manager will still have a few replacements coming into the squad.

“I played against him a few times last season and he did a couple of things on the pitch which I went, ‘wow.”

“Andy Considine had a great season for Aberdeen last season and even he’d agree that Patrick was his toughest opponent.

“It says a lot that he stands out amongst the high standard of Celtic player and he’s still young.

“He will only improve and I’m sure he’d love to come back one day if he had that chance but it’ll be his parent club which will decide where he goes.”

Meanwhile, Hayes could be set for a memorable competitive debut for Celtic after Brendan Rodgers’ side were potentially paired against Linfield in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

The Northern Irish side will play San Marino minnows La Fiorita in the opening round and if they prevail against them will then host Celtic on 11th July.

It is a powderkeg fixture but one that Hayes is unfazed about.

“I’d play in the car park tomorrow if I needed to,” said Hayes.

“I played At Windsor Park in the Foyle Cup when I was about 15-years-old with a young Irish team and that’s the only time I’ve played there.

“It will be a tough game but if Linfield go through there it will be a nice atmosphere to play in.

“You always want to play in decent football grounds and atmospheres and having spoken to Niall McGinn he talks about the atmosphere. I’m sure that if we do have to play there then we will be clued up on what to expect. It’ll be incomparable to what it’s like at Celtic Park for a Champions League match. It will be a good game if they do go through and we’ll look forward to it.”
