RYAN CHRISTIE believes Scots must learn to be more streetwise in European football as Aberdeen aim to give the game a much-needed lift by winning tomorrow in Bosnia.

But last night they were handed a boost when manager Derek McInnes committed himself to the club until 2020.

McInnes and assistant Tony Docherty have both signed 12-month extensions to their current contracts.

Aberdeen know they must score in the Pecara Stadium against Siroki Brijeg.

A disappointing 1-1 first leg draw in Scotland has left their hopes of progressing in the Europa League hanging by a thread as they attempt to reach the third qualifying round for the fourth year in a row.

Defeat for the Dons would be viewed as another disastrous blow for Scottish football after the embarrassing early exits of Rangers to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn and St Johnstone’s home and away defeats to Lithuanians FK Trakai.

And Christie – on loan at Pittodrie from Celtic – reckons Aberdeen and other Scottish clubs in Europe can be guilty of going too gung-ho when they play football in European competitions.

Now the attacking midfielder is hoping the Scottish runners-up don’t suffer from a bout of European naivety when they try and claw their way through to a potential trip to Cyprus to face Apollon Limassol in the next round.

He said: “It’s probably something we are a bit inexperienced at –the whole of Scottish football in fact. It seems like we are always chasing the game. It was frustrating and hopefully we can change it for this week.

“It was strange because even after we went 1-0 up in the first leg, there was a feeling that we needed to go again and try and get a second or third and kill the tie off.

“Maybe when we look back you could think it was a bit amateurish on our part, but I don’t think so.

“We thought we could score again, but their equaliser killed us. And then we needed to raise our game again and that was hard. But we will go again in Bosnia. We can definitely go through.”

McInnes, meanwhile, is delighted to extend his stay in the Granite City after leading the Dons to a hat-trick of runners-up spots in the league following a third-placed finish in his first full season.

He said: “We’ve still a lot to do both on and off the pitch.  I want our tenure here to be remembered as one where we were winning trophies.

“I am committed to trying to bring more success to the club and with the excellent squad of players we have, it is important we keep driving forward both on and off the pitch.”
