Brendan Rodgers has laughed off the speculation surrounding Moussa Dembele.

The French striker has reportedly been the subject of interest from Marseilles this week but Rodgers has insisted that there have been no formal talks around a proposed sale of Dembele.

The 21-year-old netted 32 goals in his inaugural season at Celtic following a move from Fulham last season and he has been linked with a string of clubs for the bulk of his time at the club.

“I counted the other day 10 clubs [that have been linked with him],” said Rodgers. “There has been nothing I’ve heard from club to club from what I’ve heard.

“It’s the time, isn’t it? Lots of speculation around him and others. It’s just the background noise.”

Meanwhile, there appears to be no imminent arrivals expected at Celtic over the coming few days.

The perceived wisdom is that Celtic may well wait now to establish what their European involvement may be before there are further players coming into the squad.

In any case, Rodgers is not swayed by tonight’s possible predicament of both his strikers being out – Griffiths is believed to still have a slight calf injury even withstanding his one-game suspension – while Emilio Izaguirre’s exit from the club has not altered any ideas about cover for the left-side of defence.

“We are trying to see if we can add, but only the right quality,” said the Celtic manager.

“I’m happy with the squad we have and you can’t control one or two injuries if you get them.

“If you have got two highly-strung strikers who are fighting for a position and then you add a third one to the mix, it can actually work against you.

“Some will say you can’t have too many good players, but I think you can. It can give you a problem you don’t need.

“It’s just unfortunate if two get injured, so we’ll see. We’ll make do and take it from there.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers has also revealed that Izaguirre was offered a substantial package to head to Saudi Arabia and the club did not wish to stand in his way. The Honduran internationalist has gone Al-Fayha after being at Celtic for seven years.

He sent a message of thanks on social media to thank the club and its support for their backing of him as he prepares for other things.

“He was offered the chance of a lifetime financially for three years,” said Rodgers of the 31-year-old. “He’s been a great servant to the club and if I thought I couldn’t cover, it couldn’t happen.

“But I look within and I have a high regard for young Tony Ralston, who can play right and left back.

“Calvin Miller is progressing well, he looks a stronger player this season. I like the look of him.

“If I was looking more attacking, I have young Jonny Hayes who can play there.

“He’s played there a number of times for Aberdeen and he can defend as well, he puts his foot in and he’s aggressive.

‘If we have to adapt, we can do so.”
