Kris Commons has urged Patrick Roberts to be the “main man” for Celtic as the Parkhead side go into the Uefa Champions League group stages.

Roberts finally completed a season long loan deal with Celtic yesterday afternoon after a protracted summer during which he came under pressure to go elsewhere by parent club Manchester City.

The 20-year-old winger himself drove a return to Celtic in order to work for a second spell under Brendan Rodgers and former Hoops playmaker Kris Commons wants to see Roberts push himself in order to fulfil the potential he has.

Glasgow Times: Patrick Roberts celebrates for Celtic last season. A return for the player is believed to be imminent.

Celtic will play PSG, Bayern Munich and Anderlecht in the Champions League and it is in this environment where Commons believes that Roberts can come of age.

“The Champions League is where now you want him to go out and be the main man,” said Commons. “That is the level that he should be aiming to be at.

“Patrick is one of the most technically gifted players I have ever seen at that age. You have to remember that he is still young, he is still a kid, but what you want him to do now is kick on.

“You don’t want to see the same Patrick Roberts that we saw over the last 12 months because he is capable of going even further than that. Towards the end of last season, for three or four months he was virtually unplayable and that is where he will want to pick up now.

“The Champions League is a higher level of opposition and that is where he can really show what he has got. We all saw last season that Moussa Dembele was able to go out and make a real impression on the tournament and that is where Patrick should be aiming.

“He is a match-winner.”

Roberts was part of Celtic’s invincible treble-winning campaign last season and it was in the final months of his original 18-month loan spell when he really impressed himself upon Rodgers’ team.

That desire for self-improvement is what Commons believes will inspire the player to keep working as he aims to continue the upward trajectory of his career.

“The thing with Paddy is that he wanted a challenge,” said Commons. “That will definitely come in the Champions League but while we would all admit that is a higher standard than the league, you have to want it in Scotland.

“You have to be on it and so much of that pressure to play well and star in every game comes from self-pressure. If he wants to get better and go onto a higher level then he has to strive to achieve a certain standard from himself in every single game.

“I think that is why he was so keen to work with Brendan again because he is the same. He wants perfection, he wants continuous improvement and he won’t allow anyone to stand still.”
