ODSONNE Edouard is looking the part in training and ready to hit the ground running as a Celtic player if Brendan Rodgers gives him the nod to start against Hamilton tomorrow night.

That is the opinion of team-mate Callum McGregor, who has spent the last week training alongside the club's new French striker while many others were on international duty.

With Leigh Griffiths unlikely to be risked ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League opener against Edouard's parent club Paris St Germain after his calf problem flared up late during Scotland's World Cup qualifying win against Malta, and Moussa Dembele back in training after his long-term hamstring problem but not yet fit to return to action either, the 19-year-old striker could be given a chance to stake his claim for a regular striking slot against the Accies.

"Edouard has been in training the last few days and is a big powerful boy," said McGregor, speaking yesterday at a launch for Topps Match Attax football cards. "I think he’d be ready. He's looked sharp in the past couple of days at training. If the manager throws him in I’m sure he’ll do well.

"He’s come in from pre-season and his fitness levels look good," added the 24-year-old. "It’s great to have him on board. He’s a quiet lad but he gets on well with the French speaking boys and Moussa has taken him under his wing to help with day to day things that we do at the club. He seems to have taken everything in his stride.”

McGregor, controversially omitted from the Scotland squad for the matches against Lithuania and Malta, said that the national team's back-to-back wins meant he could have "no complaints" over his non-selection.

A number of massive games in both domestic and continental competition in the next month or so give him another chance to "catch the eye" of the national team manager before the crucial double header against Slovakia and Slovenia next month.

“We got the weekend off, I watched the two Scotland games and that was it," said McGregor. "The boys did well and it was two good performances from two good wins – so no complaints.

"It’s nice that people are recognising that I should be in there but I stay off social media and phone ins and the like and I just focus on my clubs stuff and getting feedback from my own manager.

"Obviously my club manager sees what I can do and he likes me and has said that a few times – it’s great to have the backing of the manager and it’s good to hear that. But for me, it's just about trying to do well at Celtic and hopefully catch the eye. There are massive Celtic games in the next month and I have to do well, score goals, help the boys and do well in the Champions league and see what follows."
