Where are they now? The Celtic team that beat Motherwell in their 2011 cup final meeting

On that occasion, the Hoops lifted the 2011 Scottish Cup with a 3-0 win that came courtesy of goals from Ki Sung-yueng, Charlie Mulgrew and a Stephen Craigan own goal.

The Steelmen have a chance to get revenge for that result on Sunday when they face the champions at Hampden Park in the Betfred Cup final.

So what has happened to the Celtic side that lined up on that day?

Fraser Forster – Southampton

The Scottish Cup final win book-ended a successful first season at Celtic for the goalkeeper, who earned a second loan term at Parkhead before being signed permanently in 2012. He went on to establish his reputation with the Hoops, with a superb performance against Barcelona particularly standing out, and eventually moved to Premier League outfit Southampton in 2014.

Now in his fourth season at St Mary’s, Forster has become one of the highest-rated stoppers in the English top-flight and the 29-year-old’s form has also earned him six England caps.

Mark Wilson – Retired

Wilson left Celtic Park in 2012 to join Bristol City, but spent just one season in England before returning north of the border to join Dundee United and later Dumbarton.

The right-back retired in 2015 and has since made a foray into coaching, spending most of last season as head coach of Airdrieonians. He led the club into the League One play-offs where they were defeated by Alloa Athletic before leaving by mutual consent in the summer.  

Glenn Loovens – Sheffield Wednesday

The Dutchman ended a four-year spell with Celtic in 2012 to join Spanish outfit Real Zaragoza. He left after one season in Spain before penning an initial short-term deal with Wednesday in December 2013.

Loovens impressed sufficiently to earn a contract extension with the Owls and has since gone on to become club captain. Injury has limited his involvement this season, but he has been back in the side recently and played every minute of the Championship side’s last four league games.  

Daniel Majstorovic – Retired

Now 40 years old, Majstorovic called time on his playing career in February 2014, two seasons after leaving Celtic, for a move back to his homeland of Sweden with AIK.

The former centre-back was appointed last month as a sporting director at Swedish side Brommapojkarna after a year working for AEK Athens in a technical director capacity.

Emilio Izaguirre – Al-Fayha

The popular Honduran reluctantly ended a seven-year spell in Glasgow this summer to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Fayha.

The 31-year-old left-back struggled for game time following the explosion of Kieran Tierney and departed in search of the regular minutes that would keep him involved with the Honduras national team set up.

Scott Brown – Celtic

Still going strong, Broony is now in his 10th season at Celtic Park and has supplied some of the best performances of his Hoops career since the arrival of Brendan Rodgers last summer. The Bhoys and Scotland skipper has enjoyed a hugely successful time at the club, winning seven league titles, three Scottish Cups and three League Cups so far.  

Ki Sung-yueng

The South Korean was named man of the match for his performance against Motherwell six years ago and his form in a Celtic shirt saw Swansea City shell out a then-club record fee of around £6 million for him in 2012.

Other than a season on loan with Sunderland in 2013/14, Ki has been at Swansea ever since. The 28-year-old recently recovered from a knee injury to return to Premier League action and has featured in the Swans’ last five league outings.

Charlie Mulgrew – Blackburn Rovers

Mulgrew now plies his trade in English League One following Blackburn Rovers’ relegation last season. The versatile Scotland internationalist left his boyhood club in 2016 after the arrival of Brendan Rodgers to make the move to Ewood Park.

While his debut season with Rovers didn’t go as planned, he became a key player for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland side over the last year and has featured in his country’s last eight matches.

Kris Commons – Free agent

After a season of struggling with injury problems and a month-long loan spell with Hibernian, Commons departed Celtic Park in the summer after six and a half years in green and white.

The 34-year-old is now a free agent as he recovers from a back operation and has kept busy with media work.

Georgios Samaras - Samsunspor

The Greek striker’s career path has been a winding one since his exit from Celtic in 2014, taking him to five teams in five different countries in just three years.

Samaras joined West Bromwich Albion on his Parkhead departure, but failed to make an impact at the Hawthorns and was shipped out on loan to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal for the second half of the season.

After having his contract terminated at the end of the season, he took some time recovering from a back injury before joining American club Rayo OKC and later Real Zaragoza in Spain. This summer, he agreed terms with Turkish second-tier side Samsunspor, but he is yet to find the net for his new club.

Gary Hooper – Sheffield Wednesday

After securing the Scottish Cup in his debut season, Hooper later moved south to Norwich City in 2013 for a reported fee of £5 million. Hooper’s third and final season as a Canaries player was spent on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and he made the move permanent in 2016.

The 29-year-old remains at the club with former teammate Loovens and has begun this season in impressive form, scoring eight Championship goals in 18 games so far.
