STEVIE WOODS is confident Celtic stopper Jack Hendry can continue to go from strength to strength as he bids to make his Scotland debut in the coming days.

The 22-year-old was called up by Hampden boss Alex McLeish this week after Rangers defender Russell Martin was forced to withdraw from the squad to face Costa Rica and Hungary due to injury.

Hendry has made five appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side following his move from Dundee on the final day of the January transfer window.

And Hoops coach Woods has no doubt that he can handle the step up to international football as Scotland begin a new era under McLeish’s guidance.

He said: “He (McLeish) asked me about him last week because he came to attention after the Rangers game. He was asking me what his best position was, how he felt about playing out of position, if he was as calm on the ball as he looked.

“I gave him a positive feedback but I think he was well aware of his qualities before. I was just backing that up.

“It has been brilliant for him and I think he has got the capabilities – mentally and physically – to take that on and handle it no problem.”
