Former Celtic striker Simon Donnelly believes that there isn’t a player at Ibrox who would get into Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI.

The teams go head-to-head on Sunday at Hampden in the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final as Celtic look to take a further step towards an historic back-to-back Treble.

Rodgers has not lost to the Ibrox side in the 9 games he has played against Rangers and Donnelly believes Celtic’s superiority is clear.

“You could argue the right back [James] Tavernier has been decent this season, but I wouldn’t swap anybody in Celtic’s team,” said the former Scotland internationalist.

“They are winners at the moment.

“Until somebody knocks them off their perch I wouldn’t swap any of them.”

Donnelly spent six seasons at Celtic and was part of Wim Jansens’ 1998 title winning side who stopped Rangers winning ten-in-a-row. In the seasons leading up that, however, he endured a dominant Rangers and knows full well the lingering psychological effects of repeatedly losing to your rivals.

Graeme Murty’s side lost to ten-man Celtic as Rodgers’ side twice came from behind last month at Ibrox and the former striker can appreciate the demoralising effect the repeated exposure of losing causes.

“Rangers were an [Alfredo] Morelos kick away from getting a point [in the last game.]

“Celtic managed the game like champions and did really well.

“Back in the 1990’s when Rangers had a hold over us it didn’t take a lot to dent confidence.

“How many times did a Celtic side back then play well and Rangers would go up the park and score and you’d think ‘ here we go again.’

“That looked like what happened to Rangers.

“They were pegged back twice and right on half time too.

“They’d be asking themselves ‘how do we beat this team? They are behaving like champions.’ Celtic also still have the quality players which Rangers don’t have.”

Odsonne Edouard, Celtic’s on-loan signing from Paris Saint-Germain made his mark in that 3-2 game and Rodgers has intimated that he would like to sign the striker on a long-term deal. It is expected that the Parkhead club would have to break their own transfer record to sign Edouard and Donnelly can appreciate the weight of the outlay for the 20-year-old.

“It’s a lot of money for a kid but Brendan is working with him day in and day out - he has seen more than us,” he said.

“His goals to game ratio has been good.

“At times I think he looked a wee bit untidy, but if you look at his goal against Rangers it’s obviously a first class goal at 2-2 in a derby game at Ibrox.

“I don’t work with the boy. There is potential there, but is he another [Moussa] Dembele? I don’t know.’

“From Brendan’s point of view he has to be 100% with it.

“It will be down to him, it’s his decision - if he is prepared to pay that money instead of going looking for somebody else you have to respect that.”
