Rangers 2 Celtic 1 (AET)

The last Old Firm game may have gone against Graeme Murty’s side but there were positives to take for the Ibrox boss. Rangers were punished for their defensive mistakes, and Alfredo Morelos’ miss will go down in folklore for all the wrong reasons.

But, if Murty, and his players, learn from the errors of their ways then they can finally beat Celtic. The returns of Ross McCrorie and Graham Dorrans are major boosts for the Gers and Murty will hope his side can rise to the occasion at Hampden.

Much has been made of Celtic being unconvincing of late, but they tend to raise it for the big occasion, and while Rangers now have players who can hurt them in the likes of Jamie Murphy, I can only see Celtic going 10 unbeaten against Rangers despite a close contest.

The nature of semi-final games ensures there is always an element of wariness to the encounter but I think Celtic are stronger all over the pitch.

Furthermore, as we witnessed at Ibrox last month, Brendan Rodgers has the personnel required to change things if the original game plan has come unstuck. It is difficult to ascertain the psychological damage inflicted by that defeat and since then Celtic have strengthened with the players who have returned from injury.

Leigh Griffiths looks to have a spring in his step after a season interrupted by injury and he will be keen to make his mark on the game. In addition, Celtic have players with the required mentality and big game experience to use pressure as a catalyst for a big performance.

Celtic ought to win quite comfortably. They are a better side, the best players are coming back and they know that if they win this then history has nearly been made.

One of Graeme Murty’s problems is that he doesn’t know his best team. Certainly, there is no settled defence and Celtic can take advantage of that. Again.

What did we learn from the last Old Firm game? Well, that on the park Celtic are a better football team and are coached by a more experienced manager. To be fair we had a fair idea of that anyway…

However, what was reinforced is  that this Rangers team under Graeme Murty can cause Celtic problems. At the game at Celtic Park just before new year they competed well and could have nicked a win if Alfredo Morelos had found his range. It was a similar story at Ibrox last month as well, although not taking advantage of the visitors’ numerical disadvantage was the true failing on the day.

Both Morelos and Murty will benefit from that experience. Jamie Murphy continues to impress and Greg Docherty will likely partner Graham Dorrans in the middle of the park, but on that big Hampden pitch Celtic’s pace and energy should be too much for an at-times shaky Rangers defence to handle.

Here we go again, then. The memories of Rangers’ penalty shoot-out win over their old foes in the Scottish Cup semi-final of 2016 will no doubt give the blue hordes something to cling to. Given that they’ve not beaten Celtic since then, though, those jubilant images of that particular triumph have almost developed a sepia tint.

The wounds of the last league encounter at Ibrox cut deep and the mental heebie-jeebies may linger. The cup’s a great leveller, as they, say, but despite being a bit topsy-turvy of late, Celtic tend to rise to the challenge in the showpiece occasions and their general strength, guile and attacking instincts should see them stay on course for another silver lining.
