There is something about our mentality in this country whereby people just don’t like winners.

So when Scott Brown gets the kind of treatment that Neil Lennon got, well, actually maybe not quite because you forget just how intense it was with Lenny, but you get my drift that he is the Celtic player that opposition players and supporters go out to wind up.

Brown took three awards at Celtic’s Player of the Year dinner on Sunday night and they were all richly deserved. People talk about his leadership qualities on the pitch and in the dressing room and for me there is no doubt he is firmly in that Tony Adams, Lenny mould.

He can galvanise people, he can bring out the best in them.

But that does not win you awards. He has not been recognised for being able to shout at people and energise players but for his ability on the park.

I think it is often overlooked that technically he is a very good footballer. You just don’t last at Celtic for a decade without having that.

I hear people often slag him off and say that he winds people up but for me he is an outstanding footballer. I also think that 99 times out of 100 you could take him into a group of people and introduce him – and they would all come away with a very different impression.

He is a worker, a real grafter and I know that since the manager came in he really knuckled down. He is one of the fittest players at the club and the recognition he is deserves now.
