Few could miss Leigh Griffiths when Celtic played at Ibrox last month. Mikael Lustig, too, did not go unnoticed in among the crowd.

But Lewis Morgan was able to blend into the Hoops support like another punter as the soon-to-be-Celt turned up to see Brendan Rodgers’ silence all talk of any title challenge.

If Morgan gets his way it will not be too long before his performances in a Celtic shirt make him difficult to overlook.

The playmaker signed a deal with Celtic in January before going back to St Mirren to see out the remainder of the campaign on loan but he is itching to get started at Lennoxtown. Short-listed for the PFA Young Player of the Season award along with Kieran Tierney, Alfredo Morelos and Scott McKenna, Morgan’s performances and goals for St Mirren have been pivotal to Jack Ross’ side clinching promotion in the manner in which they have done so this term.

And Morgan is keen to maintain the same standard as soon as he gets himself into Celtic.

St Mirren bring the curtain on their season down against Falkirk this Saturday afternoon and Morgan is optimistic that he will get the chance to familiarise himself with Lennoxtown before pre-season gets underway.

“There was stuff a few weeks back that was slightly exaggerated in that sense,” he explained as he turned up at Kelvingrove art galleries for his PFA nomination. “I am not sure what will happen after this weekend.

“I am going in to get assessed in various things but I don’t know what the deal is in terms of training or anything like that. I haven’t heard anything and Celtic are at the real busy part of the season so I just have to wait and see.

“The plan is to go in and let them have a look at me before I go away for summer and I am sure that they will have a programme in mind for me when we are off.”

Rodgers has been in touch at various points throughout the season with the Celtic manager keeping close tabs on the Scotland under-21 internationalist.

Morgan has maintained his focus with the Paisley side as they have successfully negotiated their way back to the top flight but he has admitted that properly getting his teeth into his Celtic career is something that can’t come quick enough.

“Most people will look at the fact I signed in January which isn’t too long ago but there was talk of the move for a while before that so it maybe feels a bit longer from my perspective,” he said. “I am really excited.

“It has felt like a long wait. The manager has text me a couple of time and I was impressed with that because it is not as if he doesn’t have a lot on his plate at the minute. He was one of the first to get onto me when we won the league with St Mirren and it was a nice touch from him.”

Morgan’s time at St Mirren has enabled him to savour the feeling of scoring the winning goal in a derby match as the Paisley men beat Morton, an experience that should stand him in good stead as he looks to make his mark at Celtic.

“It was great to score the winner against Morton because it is a game that means so much to the St Mirren fans,” he said. “We had the open top bus on Saturday, it was a beautiful day and it was brilliant for me to experience that.

“I am not sure what the manager’s plans are whether I will play or not but that will be my last game for St Mirren. They gave me my chance and I will always be grateful for them for that. I have great memories of this season and what we have achieved but I can’t wait not to head into the next chapter of my career.”

The winger will not have competition to seek with significant options at the club.

“There are so many good players at the club but I just need to go and try to work as well as I possibly can,” said Morgan. “I am really looking forward to it. I feel good in terms of my fitness, I have had a great season with St Mirren, I’m confident and I am eager to go in and learn as much as I can from players who have done it at the top level and a manager who has a great reputation for working with young players.

“I just feel really excited. I am not thinking about what it might take to get into the team or anything like that. I just want to get in and work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.”

Morgan is also hoping to land himself a ticket for the Cup Final at Hampden next month.

Motherwell are all that stand between Celtic and a back-to-back treble and Morgan is keen to at least be able to add to the vocal backing on the day.

“I hope I will get to the final,” he said. “I am sure their focus at the minute will be on trying to get this second successive treble which would be an amazing achievement. It would be nice to go along and get the chance to be there and just cheer them on.”

A few months down the line and he’ll expect his contribution to be more substantial.
