FORMER Celtic midfielder Kris Commons could team up with Neil Lennon again at Hibernian, but says he will only return to playing if his body is up to it.

The 33-year-old ended a six-and-a-half year spell at Parkhead this summer following a difficult campaign in which he struggled with repeated back problems.

However, the former Scotland internationalist managed to make five appearances, scoring twice, while on loan at Lennon’s Hibs in the Championship between December and January and he revealed that the Northern Irishman is interested in bringing him back to the capital.

Asked about his friendship with the Hibees manager on STV’s ‘The Late Show’, Commons replied: “He is (a good friend), he gave me the greatest opportunity a man could have really by giving me the chance to play for Celtic, so I owe him a lot.”

The former Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Stoke City midfielder was then pressed on if he could be reunited with Lennon next season in the Premiership.

“He’s certainly asked the question,” said Commons.

“If my back is ok, then I’ll certainly give it a go. But I’ve had 12 months of hell where I’ve had four epidurals, I’ve had as many highs and lows as what I’ve had over the last six years in the last 12 months of the lows.

“So for me, I want to get fit and if I can play then that’s fine, but I don’t want to be the Kris Commons who’s going to drag it on for another 12 months and look like an idiot.”

Commons enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Celtic Park, making more than 200 appearances in green and white and winning five league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup as well as claiming the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and SFWA Footballer of the Year awards in 2013/14.
