NIR Bitton believes Celtic can get a result against Paris Saint-Germain in France on Wednesday night and possibly book a place in the Europa League knockout rounds – if they can eradicate defensive errors from their play.

Bitton is set to be given the nod to play at centre half against Unai Emery’s team in the Parc des Princes after helping Brendan Rodgers’s side keep a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Ross County on Saturday.

The central midfielder insisted he would enjoy the run-out if he is preferred to Jozo Simunovic – who has not featured since the win over Anderlecht in Belgium at the end of September – even though he will find himself up against Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

The Israel star, too, believes his team can get a result if they tighten up their play at the back.

“As a football player, these are the games you’re waiting for,” said Bitton. “Wednesday is going to be different from the game on Saturday in every respect – very different players and maybe the best front three in the world right now.

“But you just need to face it and you just need to enjoy it as much as you can. Everybody knows that PSG are better than Celtic, but we need to compete and show that we deserve to play at this level and hopefully we will do that.

“In every game you go out there and try to get the best result that you can. PSG are better than Celtic and they showed that in the first game (they won 5-0 at Parkhead back in September) but we need to go to Paris and try.?You never know, maybe we’ll be in the Europa League on Wednesday.”

Asked about their previous meeting with Saint-Germain, Bitton said: “To be honest, when you play games against that kind of team and you make one mistake and you pay for it.

“When you play against Neymar, Mbappe, Cavani – it doesn’t matter who plays there – you need to make no mistakes and compete. If we do that hopefully Wednesday will be another kind of game.

“As I say, when you make mistakes against these teams you pay. We need to face it. PSG beat us 5-0 at home, but I think we can get a better result and I hope we can do it on Wednesday. The pride is still there and we will go there on Wednesday and do our best.”

Rodgers described Bitton as the best centre half in Scotland outside of Celtic after his side’s 1-0 victory over County on Saturday and the player admitted he was becoming more comfortable in the position.

“I am trying to do my best and still trying to learn the position,” he said.

“If the gaffer thinks I deserve to play centre back, that’s what I will do. If he thinks I should play as goalkeeper, that’s what I will do.

“But it’s still an early stage for me as a centre back and I’m still trying to learn the position. I’m trying to be better and there are a lot of things to do.”
