Showdown would be hottest ticket in town

Both Ally McCoist and Neil Lennon have said that they would welcome squaring up to one another in the League Cup.

I am sure that if it was to happen, there would be massive interest in the tie – even more than would normally befit an Old Firm game. Which underlines the point I have made all along – that the league isn't the same without Rangers in it.

On paper I think it is a game that Celtic would welcome more than Rangers because they certainly have the better squad, but you would write off any team ahead of an Old Firm tie at your peril.

Especially given the baggage that would then be taken into the tie after all that has gone on over the past few months.

The one group of people who would be absolutely thrilled if the two waited to contest a League Cup Old Firm final would be the sponsors.

That wouldn't be until March but you could guarantee that if there is any Old Firm game this season in the cup competitions that there will be a fantastic clamour for tickets because it is something that won't happen too often over the next few years.
