KENNY Miller has told Craig Levein he should be fit enough to captain Scotland against Liechtenstein.

Levein feared Miller would be ruled out of the penultimate Euro 2012 qualifier tomorrow because of a muscle tear in his groin, but the injury has improved this week.

Miller has not trained since playing for Cardiff City on Saturday but he will do so today. Levein will then make a call on whether to play him or Craig Mackail-Smith as the out-and-out striker in a 4-1-4-1 formation.

As the most experienced of the two men, and the captain in the absence of Darren Fletcher, Miller is the preferred option.

"He's improving," said Levein as Scotland arrived at their base in Switzerland. "He hasn't trained with us yet but I expect him to do some training today.

"That's what I'm hearing from the doc at the moment anyway, that his progress has been really good. I've had a couple of brief chats with Kenny in passing and he tells me he's feeling okay.

"I won't make a decision until I find out how he is in training and also his reaction to the training."

Levein was mindful of Miller aggravating the injury and being ruled out of the Spain game on Tuesday, but his priority is beating Liechtenstein to keep alive the prospect of finishing second ahead of the Czech Republic.

"At this moment, the only game I'm concerned about is the first one. I'll worry about Spain later, because if we don't win the first one and get ourselves in pole position then it doesn't matter if he's available or not for the game in Spain.

"That's the way I'm looking at it. I'd like to play the best team possible against Liechtenstein and then we'll deal with whatever problems we have after that. Basically, if Kenny can prove his fitness then he will play."

Fletcher's absence because of tonsillitis will mean Miller, who missed the last qualifier against Lithuania because of suspension, might not only return to the side but resume the captaincy he first held against Northern Ireland in February.

"He's just a great lad," added Levein. "The way he plays the game is important because he has that never give up, never say die attitude.

"He scored a goal and made a goal in his last game for us against the Czech Republic and he's the one we generally look towards to provide goals.

"I'd love him to be fit and available for a number of reasons but if he's not then I'm more than happy that Craig Mackail-Smith can come into the team.

"Kenny leads by example all the time now as does Gary Caldwell who, I feel, has the same capabilities. In time, other guys like Phil Bardsley could do that role for us as well. We have quite a lot of strong characters."
