Chelsea interim manager Roberto Di Matteo was delighted his "risk" in starting Salomon Kalou against Benfica paid dividends.

Kalou scored the only goal of the first leg tie in Lisbon as the London team took the advantage in the Champions League quarter-final.

Di Matteo said: "He's come into the team after a long spell out and got the goal. I didn't think it was a gamble but sometimes in life you have to take a little risk.

"It was important to select a team that had the energy for a high-tempo game. It's terrific, we couldn't have hoped for a better result."

In Cyprus, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema struck twice, with Kaka also on target, as the Spanish giants beat Apoel Nicosia 3-0.
