Beasley shout
Beasley shout

RANGERS winger DaMarcus Beasley today warned Barcelona's mega-stars: "We don't fear you."

The American speed-merchant is being considered for a key starting role tonight by boss Walter Smith in the crunch Champions League Group E clash at Ibrox.

Beasley could come in for Nacho Novo as Smith ponders going with virtually the same team that won 3-0 in Lyon earlier this month - the injured Brahim Hemdani aside.

And the former PSV Eindhoven man insists that while Rangers have massive respect for every one of Frank Rijkaard's side, they are not running scared.

"When you get onto the pitch it's 11 v 11 and I don't think we will be standing back just admiring the Barcelona players," Beasley said.

"They are probably the best team in Europe with the world class players they have. But we have confidence in ourselves, and are not scared of the challenge.

"Of course it's the biggest test we have faced, and it will take a top-drawer perfomance from us. But who gave us a chance of beating Stuttgart and Lyon?"

Beasley also know that any points gained from this double-header against Barca would leave Rangers in with a great shout of reaching the last 16.

Undoubtedly, Smith and his players will be keeping one eye on the head-to-head between Lyon and Stuttgart.

Beasley went on: "Both teams have six points from the first two games, so it's a huge in terms of the group.

"I said at the start that we could surprise a few people and that we were underdogs in all six games. I think we are doing just that -not many teams can go to Lyon and win, never mind 3-0."

Boss Smith knows his team will spend a lot of this evening without the ball, but is hoping for a disciplined performance.

He will deploy his favoured 4-5-1 European formation, but knows that sitting in all night would be suicide.

"We have to take care not to leave ourselves too open, but it's Rangers' home game and we have to try and take advantage," Smith admitted.

"It would be folly not to have a regard for Barcelona, but achieving the proper balance is the most important thing."

Smith brushed aside suggestions his squad could be affected by the number of big matches they have to play.

"The best type of games to get, when you are struggling a bit mentally and physically, is big matches - and it doesn't get much bigger than tonight."
