RANGERS are today savouring their first European final in 36 years after a night of high drama in Florence.

The Light Blues knocked out Fiorentina 4-2 on penalties to reach the Uefa Cup Final against Dick Advocaat's Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday, May 14, in Manchester.

With a domestic Treble still up for grabs, the Quadruple has now become the No 1 target in the Rangers dressing room.

Steven Whittaker, one of Gers' shoot-out heroes last night after three and a half hours' goal-less football, said: "We want to win the lot - we are still in there fighting and digging away and that's two finals now.

"It's an amazing feeling to be in a Uefa Cup Final. All credit to the lads, we just keep going and going and we want to get our hands on that trophy in Manchester now.

"It will be tough against Zenit. Any team that beats Bayern Munich 5-1 over two legs must be a top side.

"But we'll got there and give it all we have, just as we have done all season. Can we win all four? It would be something if we could, but we'll just keep going one game at a time and hopefully we can."

The SPL season will now be extended by four days to May 22 after Rangers secured their place in the City of Manchester Stadium.

Rangers will play 68 games this term, and Whittaker admits it's going to be some drain on Walter Smith's squad.

But he said: "If you want to be successful, then you have to play a lot of games. If we can steer away from any more injuries, then we are confident we can keep going."

The £2m signing from Hibs stepped up second in the shoot-out after Barry Ferguson had missed the first penalty and the Italians had scored.

He smiled: "I knew it was a big one as they could have gone 2-0. I have been lucky so far scoring in the penalty kick wins over Dundee United and St Johnstone and I just followed the same plan.

"I picked my spot, put my foot through it and it went in, thankfully. Neil Alexander then made a great save and Vieri missed, and wee Nacho took us over the line.

"The feeling when he scored was sensational. It was so tense, and then with one kick you are into a European final."

Whittaker's close pal and former Hibs team-mate Kevin Thomson said: "It's unbelievable to be in a Euopean final.

"The scenes in the dressing room were amazing and you could see how much it meant to the boys. Once again we have battled hard and dug in. This team has incredible spirit."

Daniel Cousin will be suspended for the final after his red-card in extra time.
