Russians on £600k a man

by Darrell King

ZENIT ST PETERSBURG'S players will share a world record £10million bonus if they beat Rangers in the Uefa Cup Final tomorrow night.

The Russians' 18-man final squad - bankrolled by energy giants Gazprom - are on an incredible £600,000 a man in the City of Manchester Stadium.

And that is the biggest bounty ever offered as a bonus incentive to win a one-off game. In contrast, Rangers are on £50,000 a man to lift their first European trophy in 36 years. Dick Advocaat's side are leaving nothing to chance as they pursue this jackpot. They spent an hour yesterday practising penalty kicks in the event the result comes down to a do-or-die shoot-out.

"It would be a heart-attack situation if it gets to that," Advocaat said. "But penalties have been required to settle World Cups and Champions League finals before, so it could happen."

Meanwhile, sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe has warned Zenit fans they could face prison if found guilty of racist abuse towards Rangers' black players.

The Russian club have been charged by Uefa after complaints from Marseille players that they were racially abused and Sutcliffe insisted there would be a zero-tolerance approach in Manchester.

He rapped: "My message to Zenit fans is simple: come here to enjoy the game and you'll be welcomed with open arms. Come here and racially abuse black players and you will feel the full force of the law."
