Walter's ready for Champions challenge

by Darrell King

RANGERS will discover their Champions League fate when the draw for the second qualification round takes place in Nyon tomorrow morning.

And as he prepared to enter another nervy time with a minimum £10million prize at stake, boss Walter Smith today said: "We have to be ready."

The Ibrox gaffer steered his team through the qualification process a year ago after overcoming FK Zeta and Red Star Belgrade.

But Smith knows the pressure will be on his men to make sure they join Old Firm rivals Celtic in the draw for the group stage proper on August 29.

He admitted: "There is obviously a lot at stake for all the clubs going into the qualification process, both financially and in terms of prestige. It's always very nervy because of that.

"We have to overcome that and be prepared for whoever we get. We showed we could handle it last season when we got into the groups, and we have to do that again.

"Hopefully the experience of last season, from the qualifiers right through to the Uefa Cup Final, can stand us in good stead for what lies ahead."

Rangers' pre-season is now into its second week, with players such as Barry Ferguson and Carlos Cuellar - who were given extended breaks - and new signings Kenny Miller and Kyle Laffery set to check in.

Smith will gear everything towards being ready for the first European tie which will be on July 29/30, with the return a week later.

The manager will get an answer from veteran defender Davie Weir in the next 48 hours whether he is returning for another season at Rangers, or opting to take up an offer from several interested clubs closer to his family home in Cheshire.

But, despite claims of an approach from the player, Rangers have made no moves to sign £2.5million rated Slavia Prague central defender Marek Suchy.

There has also been no offers rejected from Stoke City for Lee McCulloch, with Smith stating that the Scotland man is not for sale.

Alan Gow continues to mull over his future, although it appears that a move to English Championship side Norwich City has now fallen through.

Motherwell want to sign the former Falkirk man and boss Mark McGhee hopes he can use the £150,000 compensation he will get from Ross McCormack's move to Cardiff City to meet Gers' £250,000 valuation of Gow.

But Gow's wages could prove a huge stumbling block for any interested SPL parties as he would have to take as huge wage cut, even taking into account a pay-off from Rangers on the two years he has left on his contract.
