STUART McCALL reckons the banter on the sidelines at Broadwood tonight could be more entertaining than anything that happens on the field between Rangers and Clyde.

In the away dugout will be manager Walter Smith, with his assistant Ally McCoist and newly promoted first-team coach Ian Durrant.

Just a few yards away in the home dugout will be Clyde boss John Brown, who includes Andy Goram as part of his backroom team.

All five were massive figures in the Ibrox club's nine-in-a-row success, and with Brian Laudrup, Jorg Albertz and Arthur Numan also pulling on a Clyde shirt for the night it could be viewed as something of a mini-reunion for one of the most successful Scottish teams of all time.

Having shared a dressing room with these guys for the best part of his career, McCall, now manager of Bradford City, has a fair idea of the chat that will be going on trackside. He laughed: "I'm just thinking about the five of them all on the sidelines together.

"Walter aside, I've got to say what does that say about Scottish football? What a state that must be in when those guys are running football clubs.

"People always talk about the fun we had during the nine-in-a-row days and the characters in our dressing room and I can certainly say those lads were among the most lively ones and that's saying something.

"I couldn't even go into half the stories that went on back then.

"They were really good fun to share a dressing room with and I can just imagine the slagging match that will take place during tonight's game. I just wish I was there to hear it."

McCall, no stranger to the odd dressing room wind-up himself, has first-hand experience of how these guys operate. And as much as he knows they are all characters in their own right, he insists it's important not to forget how serious they are about their football.

"They are fantastic lads and great company," he explained. "If you're looking for a good night out and plenty of laughs then you'd struggle to top that lot.

"But it's important not to forget how successful they were as professional players.

"They were all key players in a Rangers team that won countless league titles and trophies. So if they can put something back into the game and use that experience to help their current clubs then it is great for both Rangers and Clyde.

"Bomber, of course, finished playing a little earlier than the rest of us because of injury problems and did an impressive job on the coaching side of things, taking the youngsters at Rangers and then the reserves before taking up the manager's post at Clyde.

"And Ian Durrant was similar in the fact he started coaching down at Kilmarnock.

"Anyone who was involved with Killie at the time used to speak about how good he was on the training ground and how supportive he was towards the younger players. So I knew he would do well. Coisty was different because he had carved out a really good career doing Question of Sport and other media work so he could have settled for a more pressure-free lifestyle doing that.

"But I always recall my conversations with him when I was at Sheffield United, and you could just tell he missed not having a game to look forward to on a Saturday.

"As for the Goalie, well it is great to see him working at a football club now and doing goalkeeping coaching.

"I think he was disappointed not to get an opportunity before now at another club or possibly back at Rangers.

" When I look back at all the guys I played with, he is certainly the one I would say stands out as being world-class. Honestly, he was that good.

"And the thing about the Goalie was that he always worked really hard on the training field.

"So when you've played for Rangers, Scotland and Manchester United, as well as other clubs, then you have a massive amount of experience there just waiting to be passed on.

"So I'm really pleased for him that he has been given an opportunity at Clyde.

"All four of them are top guys and a great laugh, but you don't get jobs in football because you're funny in a dressing room - they are all talented people. And they are all winners - that is a vital ingredient."

McCall will be back in Scotland this week as he takes his Bradford City boys to St Andrews for training as well as games against Dundee and Motherwell.

And he joked: "Barcelona are up there training just now so my players have asked if we can join them for a training session.

"I just told them that the Barcelona players have been asking the people at their club if Stuart McCall can take their training.

"But, seriously, it's good to be coming back up and I really hope the locals come out and watch the two games.

"I've been telling the lads about the passion of football fans north of the border so I hope people come along and take in the two games."
