Rejects in twin blast at Old Firm

by Bert Mitchell

OLD FIRM rejects Gabriel Tamas and Danny Shittu have launched twin broadsides after failing to land deals.

Auxerre stopper Tamas had seemed set for a £3.5million switch to SPL champions Celtic before the Bhoys cooled their interest and is now mulling over a £7,600-per-week loan offer from Dinamo Bucharest.

Former Watford centre-back Shittu was at one point slated for a £1.5m move to Rangers but has joined Bolton in a £2m deal, And Tamas' agent Florin Manea, is furious with the collapse of his client's proposed four-year, £16,000-a-week move to Paradise.

He said: "We don't know what has happened. All we know is that the deal is off. As far as we are aware Celtic cannot come to an agreement with Auxerre. It is nothing to do with any problems with the player or myself.

"Gabriel is very disappointed the deal did not happen."

And Manea admitted Tamas will now turn his attention to other suitors with Russian cracks Spartak Moscow, Turkish giants Galatasaray and Spanish side Celta Vigo interested.

He said: "When we were talking with Celtic we did not look at other options. But now we will sit down and look at other possibilities."

Meanwhile, ex-Hornets star Shittu is still believed to be stung by the way his Light Blue dream ended.

The still-angry Shittu is continuing to seethe that Walter Smith did not return his phone calls after his moans regarding a £13,000-a-week deal being seven grand down on his initial offer turned Gers interest cold.

And a source close to the Nigerian said: "Danny left messages with Walter himself to explain there must have been a misunderstanding when he went up to Rangers. But Smith didn't call him back at all and Danny was unhappy and very disappointed about that.

"It was upsetting for him as he wanted to put the record straight. The package they put on the table was considerably less than the one discussed."
