Edu flies straight into Gers squad

by Thomas Jordan

MAURICE EDU jetted into Glasgow this morning and immediately set his sights on an Old Firm baptism of fire.

The American midfielder was collected at the airport by Gers legend Sandy Jardine and headed straight to Murray Park for a first training session with his new team-mates.

Now, the £2.7million capture from Toronto FC, will wait and see whether boss Walter Smith pitches him in at Parkhead, although a place on the bench would appear more likely.

Smith has also been boosted by the news that Kyle Lafferty trained this morning after recovering from a hamstring strain. If he shows no affects, then he will be in contention for a starting slot.

Lee McCulloch has been ruled out with a knee problem and joins long term crocks Barry Ferguson, Stevie Naismith, Chris Burke and Steven Smith on the Gers absentee list.

Across the city, Celtic boss Gordon Strachan will have both Shaun Maloney and Gary Caldwell available for selection after both men trained at Lennoxtown this morning.

But strikers Scott McDonald and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink have been rated as doubtful with groin and leg injuries respectively, even though they did some work today.

Strachan said: "Maloney will be fine. We will have to have a look at them (McDonald and Vennegoor).

"Scott has the least chance of playing. Jan has a better chance but we need to look at his mobility. They are both big hearted and both will want to play but I might have to stop them."
