NORRIE THE GRUMP (Glasgow) asked on Saturday: What were the exact circumstances of Celtic's dispute with Ferencvaros in the European Cup in the late 60's?
HERBIE (Neilston) replies: I think Norrie was talking about the 1968-69 European Cup first round when Celtic drew Ferencvaros. Celtic objected on political grounds, I think Czechoslovakia was invaded by the Warsaw Pact countries. The cup was redrawn so the Western and Eastern Bloc countries were kept apart. I think several teams withdrew that year, all from Eastern Europe.
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (Airdrie) - I've been told that Willie Cunningham, who was Scotland's captain in the 1954 World Cup Finals, once played for Airdrie. Is this true?
It certainly is, a strong, tackling, full back, Willie joined Airdrie from Dunfermline Athletic in May 1946. Three years later he was transferred to Preston for a fee of £6500. With Preston he won eight Scotland caps and, as you say, skippered us in the 1954 finals.

Purdie, McGhie, Proudfoot, McKeown, Rowe, McFarlane, Sermani, Kennedy, Thomson, Bryce, Mallan.
DAVIE J - Thomas (Collie) Allan, a goalkeeper signed for Hearts in 1906. I believe he had a good career and was certainly still Hearts goalie in season 1912-13. Can you tell me when he left Hearts or was he one of the Hearts players who died in the First World War?
Thomas Allan was registered with Heart of Midlothian from the 1906/07 season until April 27, 1908 when he was transferred to Sunderland. He returned from Sunderland to Hearts on May 1, 1911 and remained with the club until the end of the 1913/14 season. He is not recorded as one of the Hearts players killed or wounded during the First World War.

FIRHILL LUM (Balshagray) - Who did Partick Thistle sign George Smith from and how long was he with them?
He joined from Torpichen Juveniles early in 1954 and made his debut in a Scottish Cup tie against Tarff Rovers on February 13 of that year and, though he didn't score in the 9-1 win, he went on to score 125 times for the Jags in 343 outings. He left Firhill in 1963 for a short spell with Dundee United before becoming player-manager with Ballymena United in Northern Ireland.
