Celtic’s teenage centre-back Josh Thompson says he wants to learn as much from his mistakes as from his spell in the Hoops first team.

The former Stockport defender was caught out in the build-up to Dunfermline’s first goal in the 4-2 Active Nation Scottish Cup fifth-round win on Sunday.

Now he’s desperate to learn from the experience.

“I don’t accept the mistakes I make, but I made a mistake and I don’t think it was anything to do with my age,” he said.

“I should have dealt with it better. People will make mistakes but I don’t accept that it’s part of my development.

“I want to learn as much as I can and deal with these situations.”

Thompson has been thrown in at the deep end due to the lack of bodies available to manager Tony Mowbray.

Andreas Hinkel and Jos Hooiveld are crocked, while Gary Caldwell and Stephen McManus have left the club.

The Hoops boss said he had tried to get another central defender into the club during the January transfer window but to no avail.

Now Thompson is keen to make the most of his chance. “I didn’t expect it to come so quickly as it has done, so it has been a bonus,” he told the Celtic Huddle.

“I think I have done alright but I am still learning. Now I need to learn from the centre-halves who are here and from the coaches. There is a lot of learning for me to do.”
