Ian Durrant insists Ricky Foster can prove the doubters wrong and be a hit at Ibrox.

The 25-year-old joined Rangers on loan from Aberdeen on transfer deadline day to provide cover at the back, after the earlier bolstering of the front line with James Beattie, Vladimir Weiss and Nikica Jelavic.

Foster can play across the defence or midfield, his versatility making him an attractive addition for Walter Smith as the manager battles with a reduced first-team squad.

Many Rangers fans may be underwhelmed by Foster’s arrival, but first-team coach Durrant reckons the player will prove will invaluable as the Light Blues bid for three-in-a-row.

“We’re absolutely delighted to bring in Richard. I have seen him many times and he can play many positions,” he told Rangers.co.uk.

“The gaffer was looking for an additional squad player and I’m sure Richard will be a great asset to the club.

“He can play in a few positions and he is also blessed with pace. A carrot has been dangled in front of him with the Champions League coming up. I met him the other morning and he was full of enthusiasm.

“Mark McGhee was reshaping his team and Richard was surplus to requirements at times but I’m sure he will push hard for a place here.

“We have brought in four new faces and that has given freshness to the squad and they are all of a very high quality.

“I think the lads all need a bit of time. Vlad has not had many games in pre-season and James Beattie is the same.

“Jelavic will undoubtedly add to the team. He has already shown in training and when he came on last weekend that he has something about him.”
