Steven Naismith believes Scotland’s 0-0 draw against Lithuania in their opening Group I match has given them a springboard into tomorrow night’s Hampden clash with Liechtenstein.

The Rangers striker is confident that the Scots can create the same level of openings they did in Kaunas and this time convert any chances that come their way against the group minnows.

And Naisy is hoping a promising display on the left flank has done enough to see him stay in the starting line-up.

He said: “I think the Lithuania game has given us a platform to build on for the rest of the group fixtures. We will see how things unfold, but it was our first clean sheet away from home in three years so, defensively, it was positive.

“I would like to think we can create the same number of chances as we did in Lithuania and, if we do, then this time I’m sure we will take them.”

But Naismith revealed his frustration at spurning a golden opportunity to break the stalemate in Lithuania.

He said: “As the ball came over I knew it was going to land at me and it was going to be a chance, but it got stuck in between my feet. The difference between club level and international football is that the defenders are very sharp. I was disappointed not to take it.”

But the Gers star is hoping to feature in the front line once again against Liechtenstein.

Naisy said: “I was very surprised to start as it is the first squad and I had not been involved with the manager. I thought I was just going to get in and try and show him what I could do in training but probably be on the bench.

“But when he named the team I was wide left and hopefully I have done enough to stay in the manager’s plans.”
