Gary hopes to take step back next time

GARY CALDWELL hopes Scotland boss Craig Levein restores him to his favoured centre-half berth for the World Cup qualifying campaign.

National skipper Caldwell was drafted into midfield for the friendly with Australia at Easter Road on Wednesday in the absence of Darren Fletcher.

Former Celtic player Caldwell performed well in the boiler room in a morale-boosting 3-1 win for the home team.

However, the 30-year-old said he wants to play at the back in his country's bid to make it to Brazil 2014.

Asked if he might play in midfield in future, he said: "I hope not. I hope the boys are back.

"We've got loads of good midfielders and, unfortunately for this one, we had a lot of call-offs in that area and the manager asked me to do a job.

"I'm happy to do it but hopefully we'll have all the boys back for the next game."

Caldwell added: "The Australia game was a good exercise. I thought we started on the front foot, played very well for the whole night and deserved to win.

"There were reasons for the performance when he were beaten by the USA. We've shown we are a good side. We need to take that performance into the qualifiers."
