There’s no danger of St Mirren goalkeeper Paul Gallacher underestimating how much a Co-operative Cup triumph would mean to the club – his Buddies-daft in-laws are only too quick to tell him.
Gallacher will be a popular man with his wife’s family if he can keep out Rangers in the Hampden final on Sunday.
St Mirren are preparing for their first major final since winning the 1987 Scottish Cup and Paisley-born Gallacher is desperate to bring some glory to the town.
“It would mean the world to the club and the town,” said the 30-year-old. “Being from the area, I know what it would mean to a lot of them.
“My wife’s family support the team, so I know what it would be like for them.
“It would be an absolutely fantastic achievement to bring the cup home. The last time was ‘87 so the chance doesn’t come around often. You have to grab it with both hands.”
Billy Mehmet has been the epitome of St Mirren’s varying fortunes, hitting eight goals in the knockout tournaments compared to three in the SPL.
“He’s got an absolute knack in the cup, he has been banging the goals in,” Gallacher said.
“We hope he can continue his good cup form.”
