Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has ruled out any chance of James McCarthy doing a U-turn over his decision to snub Scotland for the Republic of Ireland.
And the Spanish gaffer has pointed the finger of blame at the boo boys who targeted McCarthy when he was still at Hamilton Accies.
The Glasgow-born teenager has a grandfather from Donegal and has played five times for the Republic’s Under-21s.
But the 19-year-old, who has just broken into Wigan’s first team after his £1.2million move from the SPL, is on new Scotland boss Craig Levein’s radar.
Martinez, though, believes McCarthy won’t be persuaded to change his mind.
He said: “In Scotland they made a huge meal out of it, they let him know how they felt when he chose the Republic of Ireland and that could have a bearing on his decision.”
