Shettleston striker Scott Anson is counting down the hours until tomorrow’s Springburn head-to-head with Petershill as he and his team-mates go all out to underline claims they are Glasgow’s best in the West.

Hugh Kelly’s promoted side were cruelly considered poor relations of the Peasy and last season’s Super First Division champions Pollok when the trio kicked off their league campaigns four weeks ago.

But defeat to reigning champions Auchinleck Talbot on the opening day was followed by the Town chalking up back-to-back wins against Irvine Meadow and Rob Roy.

And those results have hoisted Hugh Kelly’s men to a lofty third top spot in the table while their more fancied city neighbours are scrambling to climb clear of the basement area after failing to record a single victory between them in their early season contests.

The situation is undoubtedly a turn-up for the books, however Anson insists he and his team-mates aren’t losing any sleep over New Petershill Park and Newlandsfield affairs.

He said: “Every game in this Super Premier Division is different and the key is to try and pick up points regardless of the circumstances we find ourselves in.

“Without sounding in any way disrespectful, we more or less coasted to victory in the Medda game yet still managed to get a similar winning result against Rob Roy, despite being outplayed for long spells last weekend.

“In the first half in particular we took a roasting, but our defence did superbly to keep their forwards at bay while at the other end Rikky McIntosh and I managed to score with literally our first looks at goal.

“It was my first league goal of the season and I hope there’s more to come, starting with Petershill tomorrow as we owe them one for our 1-0 defeat through there in the Euroscot Eng League Cup quarter finals.

“And if further motivation is needed then surely our dressing room will be fired up by the Peasy being regarded as a bit of a bogey team given that Shettleston haven’t beaten them in the last four and a half years.

”We’ll certainly not go into the game feeling inferior following the Euroscot defeat in which the teams were evenly matched for the most part but we paid the price for missing a number of good scoring chances that could have seen the result go in our favour.”

Anson went on to reveal Chrissy McCormack is on the verge of making his Shettleston return against Petershill and has tipped the one time Celtic signing to make up for lost time .

Injuries and suspension have severely curtailed the busy midfielder’s appearances as indeed has the outstanding early season form of his replacement Ryan Scott whose unavailability tomorrow opens the door for McCormack to shine.

“Chrissy’s work ethic at training throughout his time on the sidelines has been nothing short of phenomenal and it’s no bad thing to have him itching to remind everyone what he has to offer out on the pitch.

“But he’s alone in our dressing room in wanting to prove a point as the gaffer had five players on the bench against Rob Roy who would in all likelihood have been considered certain starters last season.

“Everyone is champing at the bit which is understandable given it took a supreme effort to get Shettleston into the Super Premier and now we’re determined to stay there.

“And if we can just keep our main hitters injury and suspension free then I truly believe we’re in with a decent shout of staying up...even more so after our good start.”

His description appears to fit Anson, McIntosh, goalkeeper Bryn Halliwell and inspirational centre-back and team skipper Reon Juskowiack, but the bustling frontman was at pains to point out Shettleston win and lose as a team.

He added: “Every player has played a part in our success story up to now and we will need everyone pulling together to maintain the standards we have set.

“It’s important we as a team don’t get too far ahead of ourselves thinking about games to come and to be fair Hugh Kelly is forever urging us to concentrate on only the game in hand.

“That’s why I didn’t give Petershill a thought until coming in to training on Monday night and discovering we play them next.

“I cannot imagine for a moment who we’ll be playing next and that’s exactly how it should be.”

Rob Roy’s defeat at the hands of Shettleston will not force team boss Stewart Maxwell into ringing the changes for the daunting task of facing Auchinleck at Guys Meadow.

Maxi revealed: “I thought we played excellently last week and I cannot fault my players for their efforts or the manner and it says everything that their goalkeeper Halliwell was the best player afield - and needed to be.

“Unfortunately, the game was ruined by a total of 16 yellow cards being dished out (one every five and a bit minutes) including two of our guys Danny McKenzie and Danny Boyle receiving double cautions in the second half and being sent inside.

“Their dismissals killed our recovery hopes yet though the game sounds Donnybrook like it was anything but.

"And it only underlines how farcical things had become when l was singled out to receive my first ever red card since moving into management.”

The highly competitive Greenfield Park encounter saw Rabs pair Stevie Aitken and Chris Duff pick up injuries that has them rated extremely doubtful for going up against Talbot.
