ST ROCH'S manager Andy Cameron last night shot down talk of the newly-promoted clubs achieving a Central First Division 1-2-3.

He is adamant that it remains 'highly improbable' for Second Division champions Rossvale, runners-up Johnstone Burgh and his third best last time out Candy Rock side to continue leading the way in this season’s title race.

The trio are currently in a five-way tie atop the pile along with Renfrew and Thorniewood United.

However, Cameron claims his focus is on nothing more than coming out on top in tomorrow’s clash with city rivals Vale of Clyde, which has been switched to Fullarton Park because of ongoing renovation work inside the James McGrory Stadium’s pavilion.

The unassuming Garngad gaffer said: “I’ve been very reliably informed that St Roch's only picked up a miserly 10 points when they were last in the first division.

"So the only target I’ve set the players is to do better and we’re already on nine points so one more win does the trick.

“Clearly I believe that to be an aim well within our capabilities and I don’t mean these words to be in any way disrespectful towards Vale of Clyde whom I believe to be a far better side than their current league position indicates.

“But the simple truth is my players have started away this season similar to how they finished off last time ... winning games and scoring goals.

"So it’s only natural for dressing room confidence to be sky high as a result.

“Indeed we could easily be sitting with 12 points out of 12 but for throwing our game against St Anthony's through sheer naivety.

"But I really cannot complain at three wins out of four games given where we have come from in the past 12 months.

“And I’m no defeatist but if and when we get more than ten points in the bag then my sights will be set no higher than what it takes to finish fourth bottom of the First Division in order to avoid relegation.

“Rossvale might consider themselves in with a shout of emulating what Blantyre Vics achieved with back to back title wins.

"But I’m willing to bet Martin Lauchlan would gladly settle for consolidating his club’s place in the higher Division and the same applies to Colin Smith and his Burgh players.

“All those people making bold predictions really need to take a reality check as we are only four games into the league campaign.”

Another shot in the arm for Cameron’s team-building skills arrived earlier this week when St Roch's emerged as 5-1 winners over reigning Scottish Amateur Cup kingpins Harestanes in a floodlit Glasgow Green contest.

He said: “Our guys were really up for the game which is understandable considering there are upwards of 20 players at our training sessions and everyone is champing at the bit to try and impress.

“Catching the eye more than most are midfielder Kieron Martin who has netted in each of our four league outings while goalkeeper John Stark who arrived from Blochairn Star and previously played for Petershill has been outstanding.

“Jordan Logan has come on in leaps and bounds from last season and is posing a goals threat alongside T.J. McLuskey but a special mention is also due to our close season additions Kenny Jarvis (ex-Rob Roy), Jason McCormick (Renfrew), Brian Henderson (Airdrie).

“And now we’ve landed Danny Irvine (Petershill) to further boost playing resources so I’m delighted with the make-up of our squad and indeed my own backroom team where Gary Flint (ex-Albion Rovers) and Tommy Burns (Blantyre Vics) are on board to lend their considerable nous to our cause.

“I’m just so pleased to see them connecting well with the players whose early season form is down to them.”

Cameron went on to reveal how a behind the scenes initiative is starting to pay dividends.

He explained: “St Rochs will always have football as our No.1 focus, but we cannot lose sight of the fact ours is Community Club with responsibilities to local people .

“Hence the reason we recently started up a 'Homework Club' which entails tutors from Glasgow University coming to the James McGrory Stadium to help children from these parts (and from further afield) to pass their maths and physics exams.

“Payback for St Roch's Juniors comes from various means, but we are definitely breeding the next generation of supporters.”

Another First Division side to take part in midweek action were Maryhill for whom Andy Monaghan (2), Jamie Docherty and Justin Begg were on the scoresheet in a 4-2 triumph over Clyde under 20’s.

Team boss Jim Delaney is urging his players to continue their winning ways when going up against table-toppers Rossvale through in Springburn.

He said: “Back-to-back defeats at the hands of Renfrew and Lesmahagow have taken the wind out of our sails and acted as a reminder that we cannot afford to let standards drop in this Division.

“Hopefully our having a fully-fit squad to call upon for the first time this season will see us get back to winning ways however a tough test awaits.”

Meanwhile it’s been revealed that Scotland backroom team duo Mark McGhee and Stuart McCall will pull the names from the hat when the Scottish Junior Cup second round draw takes place at Marr Hall on Tuesday.

And hard not to believe yesterday’s William Hill Scottish Cup proper second round draw has not been kind to Junior football’s surviving representatives Auchinleck Talbot and Linlithgow Rose.

Talbot, if they can overcome BSC in their replay tilt at Beechwood Park tomorrow afternoon, have been landed with a Broadwood Stadium tie against Cumbernauld Colts, managed by ex-Dunipace management duo Craig McKinlay and James Orr whose team mainly comprises of former Junior players such as Jamie Barclay (Pollok), Gary Espener (Dunipace) Andy Ward (Benburb).

Linlithgow face a longer trek away to Highland League strugglers Clachnacuddin.
