IN the West Region League action, Hurlford’s position atop the Super Premier pile remained unchanged, however there were all manner of movements beneath them, most notably with Rob Roy moving into second top spot with a stirring 3-2 comeback win at home to Irvine Meadow.

Sean Fraser’s early score for the Ayrshiremen was cancelled out by former Medda striker Willie Sawyers before half-time and the striker was integrally involved when forward-line partner Kevin Watt fired the Rabs 2-1 in front after the interval.

Back again came the visitors to level matters at 2-2 through a hotly-disputed Ryan Deas spot-kick, however it was Stewart Maxwell’s men who prevailed best over the closing stages and stopper Danny Boyle scored with a towering header to secure the points.

Yet another of the newly-promoted sides, last season’s Super First champions Pollok, made huge strides up the table with a Derek Hepburn inspired 2-0 triumph over long standing city rivals Petershill.

The former Vale of Clyde hitman set up the first goal for Alan McKenzie with just 30 seconds on the clock and then doubled his side’s advantage with a wonderful solo effort just before half-time that ultimately sealed victory.

Not so fortunate were fellow-promoted Shettleston who succumbed to a 3-0 beating away to Kilbirnie Ladeside for whom Ian Gold, Kieron Brannon and Stevie Meechan were on the mark.

And hats off to Beith’s players for restoring their pride with goals from Darren Christie, Andy Reid and Ross Fisher clinching a 3-1 win at home to Glenafton whose consolation score was netted by Michael McCann.

Meanwhile, there were upsets of differing sorts for Super First Division leading lights Clydebank and Kilsyth Rangers after both clubs dropped points.

Robert O’Neil’s early goal had the Bankies looking good for the spoils against derby rivals Yoker Athletic until Whe Ho midfielder Mark Maxwell popped up to score a last-minute equaliser.

However, arguably an even a bigger shock befell previously unbeaten Kilsyth in going down 2-1 at home to Ardrossan Winton Rovers.

It had appeared to be business as usual at Duncansfield when Paul McBride fired the Gers 1-0 ahead, however a brace of headed goals from Rovers striker Ian Reid earned a first league win for Chris Strain’s men.

Left boasting the only Super First Division 100% record are Largs Thistle who had Larry McMahon, Nikky Jamieson, Mathew Santos and Alan Frizzell on target in an impressive 4-0 success away to Rutherglen Glencairn while notably up into fourth top spot are revamped Cumbernauld United whose 4-1 defeat of Greenock came through goals from Dominic O’Halloran, Kris Irvine, Simon Eels and Dylan McGuigan.

And fallen giants Cumnock appear to be on an upwards march after Paul Quinn (2) and Paul Murphy counters helped overcome Blantyre Vics by a 3-1 scoreline.

It wasn’t the best of days for West Region sides in Scottish Junior Cup replays with first round exits suffered by five clubs, most notably Bellshill Athletic who went down 1-0 to a Vinny McGuire goal for Wishaw while Port Glasgow, leading through a Sean Lawrence score, conceded two goals in the closing minutes to finish on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline in a dramatic New Tinto Park clash against Benburb.
