David Greig is prepared to go to any lengths to keep the feelgood factor surrounding his Blantyre Vics side.

Last season’s Central First Division champions have bounced back from a poor start to their Super First Division campaign with three wins in their last four league outings.

But ambitious gaffer Greggy fears a rash of weather-enforced postponements could see their momentum come unstuck.

He said: “Castle Park is notorious for being waterlogged despite any amount of hard work carried out on the pitch by our club officials.

“Three out of four scheduled home fixtures dating back to October have been called off for that very reason.

"And already there are real concerns that this weekend’s meeting with Greenock is going to be another victim.

“If the downpours are showing no signs of letting up and there’s a chance of Ravenscraig Stadium passing muster then hopefully Greenock will agree to reversing the fixture in order to keep both teams playing.

“Everyone involved with the club wants to avoid a repeat of last season when we went from November to March - 13 Saturdays in all - without kicking a ball in anger.

"And then we ended up with a physically exhausting schedule of three and four games each week when the lighter nights arrived.

“Our season also extended well into June and I believe the shortened summer break contributed in no small way to the players being slow out of the blocks and looking out of sorts this time around."

Storm Desmond's heavy rain and strong winds did not deter Greig and his Vics playing charges from taking part in a friendly encounter last Saturday afternoon against Super Premier Division leading lights Rob Roy at the Glasgow Green complex.

The Vics boss said: "We lost the game 2-1 with Stevie Dymock scoring our goal and Willie Sawyers and Kevin Watt counting for Rob Roy.

"But the result was not important and both sets of players deserve great credit for serving up what was a decent match in quite horrendous conditions.

“It was encouraging to see us running the Rabs so close and the workout sets our guys up nicely for facing such a tough opponent as Greenock, a committed and workmanlike outfit who bullied us into submission when the teams last met .

“Their energy and teamwork in hunting us down in packs won the day. However, I’d like to think my players have learned one or two lessons that can be put to good use whether the game is at our place or theirs.”

Word on the team front is that suspension rules out young Vics full-back Graham Watson while experienced campaigner Davie Green is just a couple of weeks away from making a playing comeback after three months on the sidelines.

Greig admitted: "We’ve missed Davie so it will be good to have him involved and around the place again however the word is not so good on Wasso Ferguson’s knee problem and it’s looking like he might not figure again until the New Year.

“We tried to fill the gap left by his long term absence with a transfer bid for Danny Burns when he was transfer listed by Arthurlie. However. he opted instead to be reunited with his former Lanark manager Tam McDonald at Shotts Bon Accord.

“It’s disappointing to miss out on him, but we won’t panic buy with just anyone who becomes available and best we bide our time to see if anyone with similar qualities comes across our radar.”

Among other Super First Division contests is an intriguing basement head to head between fourth bottom Shotts and two points worse off Bellshill Athletic at Hannah Park while difficult to envisage bottom markers Maybole taking anything from hosting the visit of a strong going Cumnock seeking to notch up a tenth consecutive victory.
