Kevin Watt is hoping to relive one of the best days in his relatively short Junior career by helping Rob Roy topple Pollok at Newlandsfield on Saturday.

It was in April last season when both clubs were competing for the Super First Division title honours that on-loan Clyde striker Watt played his part in a memorable 3-0 triumph for the Kirkintilloch outfit.

Ultimately, it did not prevent Tony McInally’s side going on to be crowned champions, though the three points haul undoubtedly proved crucial in the Rabs winning promotion.

Spectators taking in that clash could not have envisaged eight months further down the line finding the rivals at top of the table loggerheads again, this time in a Super Premier Division showdown between tabletoppers Lok and nearest challengers Rob Roy …one point worse off albeit from four games fewer played.

Watt's scintillating form this season makes him a shoe-in to be included in the visiting line up even though the unassuming front man is taking nothing for granted following a sequence of hammer blows that led to his dream of a Senior career turning sour.

He first surfaced as a 17-year-old discovery of Kenny Black’s at Airdrie United before moving on to Albion Rovers and East Stirling prior to former Junior legend Danny Drew signing him for Cumbernauld Colts.

The hitman, now 26, recalled: “Playing under Danny was enjoyable and scoring a few goals led to my reinstatement to Bo’ness United, managed back then by current Rob Roy assistant boss Paul Ronald.

“ But I was persuaded by Jim Duffy to join Clyde and stayed there for three seasons before falling out of favour led to Ronaldo making a move to get me on loan.

“Initially, I wanted to stay and fight for my place, but Barry Ferguson was now in charge and he felt I should go and play regularly so I went to Rob Roy around this time last season and enjoyed a fabulous six months stint.

“Winning promotion was the icing on the cake, but the end of season brought signing interest from Jim Chapman at Annan Athletic and I decided to give the Senior game another go, though it proved a bad decision to say the least.

“Chappy and the people at Annan were grea,t but my second daughter Poppy had just been born and the chore of going from my day job straight to training and not getting home to Newmains until after midnight was soul destroying.

“Chappy agreed that family should come first and his releasing me had Maxi and Ronaldo on my case, though I was only too willing to go back and rejoin a terrific dressing room.”

Kevin, now a permanent signing, insists many Super Premier top flight clubs could easily survive at Scottish Third Division level and he reckons there are several superior playing surfaces and grounds in the Juniors.

He said: "Auchinleck Talbot’s set up takes some beating and they are probably the best team I’ve come up against in the Juniors though I was also impressed with Hurlford United and Irvine Meadow when we played them.

“Some of the playing talents I’ve come across at these clubs really should be playing at a higher level and I cannot help but include my own defensive team mates DannyMcKenzie and Danny Boyle in this respect.

“Luke Whelan a midfielder who arrived from Queens Park is another cracking prospect while our winger Chris Duff can be anything he wants to be in football - if only he puts his mind to it.

“” And I cannot let the moment pass without a special mention to Paul Finnigan who is getting on a bit at 36 years of age but has been outstanding since I came to Rob Roy and I can only think he must have been some player at his peak.”

Turning his attention to next up opponents Pollok , he added , “ You cannot help but respect a team that contains top players who have dropped down from Senior level such as Paul Gallagher and Davie Winters.

“And let’s not forget John Sweeney whom I rate very highly from having played alongside him for three years at Clyde and who has been banging in the goals for Pollok of late.

“ John has the ability to run the show in midfield but I’m sure Maxi will be making plans to close down his space and influence on the game.”

Rabs gaffer Maxwell is hoping Scotland Juniors manager Keith Burgess will be on the Newlandsfield terracings come kick-off time .

He added: “ What better game for him to take in than a head to head between the two leading West Region clubs and the extra bonus is seeing two of the best technical forwards going the rounds in Kevin Watt and Davie Winters.”
