Rob Roy gaffer Stewart Maxwell last night called on his club’s fringe players to win a place in the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup quarter-finals.

The Kirkintilloch outfit are beset with an injury crisis ahead of going up against Super First Division high flyers Clydebank in the pick of the last 16 ties taking place tomorrow.

But Maxi is refusing to give up on his dream of steering the Rabs to a first West of Scotland Cup silverware success in over 50 years.

They last held aloft the trophy with a memorable 7-2 aggregate win over Neilston in a two-legged final back in 1963 that saw Rob Roy triumph 3-2 in the first game prior to a more comprehensive 4-0 victory when the teams met again.

Maxi said: "Nobody connected with this club is for giving up on the Super Premier title until the maths don’t add up so why shouldn’t our sights remain every bit as firmly trained on the West Cup?

“ A whole raft of top clubs are in the reckoning …including of course Clydebank who in my opinion are a Super Premier side in everything but name.

"But my players have shown themselves capable of beating anyone on their day so people write us off at their peril.

“Yes it’s true to say we are in a weakened condition and I would probably describe us as being down to the bare bones for tomorrow’s clash, but our dressing room does not lack for players desperate for the opportunity to come in and do just as good a job as the so called regulars."

”We may have to adapt our playing set-up, but cup games are all about winning and it doesn’t really matter how we do it.”

Ball winning centre-back Danny Boyle continues to be sorely troubled by a sciatic nerve problem while Jordan McGuire, Kevin Watt and Stephen McGuire are rated extremely doubtful on top of influential midfielder Gary McMenamin being discounted for the rest of this season after tearing his hamstring in a recent victory over Pollok.

Rob Roy ran out 2-0 winners in a Euroscot Eng Sectional League Cup last eight clash with the Bankies earlier this season but Maxi considers that contest will have no bearing whatsoever on tomorrow’s outcome.

He said: "We are a much changed team from back then and so too are Clydebank as Gary McMenamin discovered when he went along and took in their 2-2 draw with Cumnock last weekend.

He came away impressed with their organisation and forward going play with strikers Ryan Holms Nikky Little in particular catching the eye along with their dangerous flank player Mark Burbridge.

“From a football purist viewpoint, his head-to-head with our own Danny McKenzie should be something to savour as Danny has been turned in a string of excellent performances and is undoubtedly playing at the very top of his game.

“This is a cup that tends to throw up shock results and last season comes to mind for Ardrossan Winton Rovers knocking out Auchinleck as well as Wishaw getting the better of Pollok, so we will need to be on our guard even though taking on the Bankies can hardly be described in David v Goliath terms.”

The worry of a cup upset should not concern reigning West Cup holders Arthurlie who appear to have too much in their locker for Super First Division bottom markers Bellshill Athletic even though the Lanarkshire club’s Rockburn Park playing surface can be a bit of a leveller.

Eleven times winners of the coveted trophy, Auchinleck Talbot host the visit of Central Second Division league leaders Cambuslang Rangers and Talbot boss Tommy Sloan has warned his players against regarding the Wee Gers as minnows.

He said: "Cambuslang are sitting top of their table and will understandably have a confidence about them as well as a burning desire to turn us over and raise a few eyebrows.

“Matching their motivation is a must if we are to come out on top and we may have to ask James Latta and Steven White to lead our cause in this respect as they better than most what to expect.

“Losing out to Hurlford United in the Scottish puts added importance on the New Coin Holdings Cup and our players have to roll their sleeves up and show what this game means to them.

“Unfortunately the game is coming a week or so too early for Craig McRacken who was badly missed against Hurlford after turning his ankle at training and it’s looking like Martyin McGoldrick will also be posted missing with a groin strain.”

The remaining tie is an all-Ayrshire affair between Cumnock and Irvine Meadow which could go the way of the Nock , unbeaten in their last 15 outings, against a Medda side looking a shadow of their previous selves albeit set to be boosted by the return from suspension of winger Gary McCann.
